Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Marcos 6,17-29 – Naquele tempo, 17Herodes tinha mandado prender João e colocá-lo acorrentado na prisão. Fez isso por causa de Herodíades, mulher do seu irmão Filipe, com quem se tinha casado. 18João dizia a Herodes: “Não te é permitido ficar com a mulher do teu irmão”. 19Por isso Herodíades o odiava e queria matá-lo, mas não podia. 20Com efeito, Herodes tinha medo de João, pois sabia que ele era justo e santo, e por isso o protegia. Gostava de ouvi-lo, embora ficasse embaraçado quando o escutava. 21Finalmente, chegou o dia oportuno. Era o aniversário de Herodes, e ele fez um grande banquete para os grandes da corte, os oficiais e os cidadãos importantes da Galileia. 22A filha de Herodíades entrou e dançou, agradando a Herodes e seus convidados. Então o rei disse à moça: “Pede-me o que quiseres e eu to darei”. 23E lhe jurou, dizendo: “Eu te darei qualquer coisa que me pedires, ainda que seja a metade do meu reino”. 24Ela saiu e perguntou à mãe: “O que vou pedir?” A mãe respondeu: “A cabeça de João Batista”. 25E, voltando depressa para junto do rei, pediu: “Quero que me dês agora, num prato, a cabeça de João Batista”. 26O rei ficou muito triste, mas não pôde recusar. Ele tinha feito o juramento diante dos convidados. 27Imediatamente, o rei mandou que um soldado fosse buscar a cabeça de João. O soldado saiu, degolou-o na prisão, 28trouxe a cabeça num prato e a deu à moça. Ela a entregou à sua mãe. 29Ao saberem disso, os discípulos de João foram lá, levaram o cadáver e o sepultaram. – Palavra da salvação.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Mark 6,17-29 - At that time, 17Herod had ordered John to be arrested and chained to prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, with whom he had married. 18John said to Herod, "You are not allowed to be with your brother's wife." 19 So Herodias hated him and wanted to kill him, but he couldn't. 20 Indeed, Herod was afraid of John, for he knew that he was just and holy, and that is why he protected him. He liked to hear it, although he was embarrassed when he heard it. 21Finally, the opportune day came. It was Herod's birthday, and he made a great feast for the great court, the officials, and the important citizens of Galilee. 22 Herodias' daughter came in and danced, pleasing Herod and his guests. Then the king said to the girl: "Ask me for what you want and I will give it to you". 23And he swore to her, saying, "I will give you whatever you ask of me, even if it is half of my kingdom." 24She went out and asked her mother, "What am I going to ask for?" The mother replied: "The head of John the Baptist". 25And, returning quickly to the king, he asked: "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate now." The king was very sad, but he could not refuse. He had taken the oath before the guests. 27 Immediately, the king ordered a soldier to fetch John's head. The soldier went out, slaughtered him in prison, 28threw his head on a plate and gave it to the girl. She gave it to her mother. 29 Upon learning of this, John's disciples went there, took the corpse and buried it. - Word of salvation.

João Batista morre degolado por ordem de Herodes. O episódio se dá na fortaleza de Maqueronte, a leste do mar Morto. A celebração do martírio de São João Batista tem origens antigas (século V, na França; século VI, em Roma). Está vinculada à dedicação da igreja construída em Sebaste, na Samaria, sobre o suposto túmulo do Precursor de Cristo. Seu martírio se dá durante um banquete que Herodes oferecera “a seus magnatas, aos oficiais e às grandes personalidades da Galileia”. Nessa ocasião, o rei faz os caprichos da filha de Herodíades, que pede a cabeça de João. Tão sem juízo a filha quanto maligna e impiedosa a mãe. O profeta se vai, mas o seu testemunho de fidelidade a Deus permanece para sempre.

John the Baptist dies beheaded by order of Herod. The episode takes place in the fortress of Maqueronte, east of the Dead Sea. The celebration of the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist has ancient origins (5th century in France; 6th century in Rome). It is linked to the dedication of the church built in Sebaste, in Samaria, on the supposed tomb of the Precursor of Christ. His martyrdom takes place during a banquet that Herod had offered "to his tycoons, officials and the great personalities of Galilee". On this occasion, the king does the whims of the daughter of Herodias, who asks for the head of John. The daughter is as senseless as the mother is evil and merciless. The prophet is gone, but his testimony of faithfulness to God remains forever.

Por um lado, a fé não é um processo linear e participa no desenvolvimento da pessoa, e este, por sua vez, influencia o caminho da fé. Não se pode esquecer que cada fase da vida está exposta a desafios específicos e deve fazer face às dinâmicas sempre novas da vocação cristã.

224. Every baptized person, called to the maturity of faith, has the right to an adequate catechesis. Therefore, it is the Church's task to give a satisfactory answer to this right. The Gospel is not intended for the abstract man, but for each man, real, concrete, historical, rooted in a particular situation and marked by psychological, social, cultural and religious dynamics, because "each and every one was understood in the mystery of the Redemption" 1. On the one hand, faith is not a linear process and participates in the development of the person, and this, in turn, influences the path of faith. It cannot be forgotten that each stage of life is exposed to specific challenges and must face up to the ever new dynamics of the Christian vocation.
