Let not everyone who believes in him die, but have eternal life.

1a. Leitura
– Palavra do Senhor.

1st. Reading
Reading from the Book of Numbers 21,4-9 - In those days, the 4th children of Israel departed Mount Hor, by the path that leads to the Red Sea, to bypass the country of Edom. During the journey, the people became impatient 5 and began to speak against God and against Moses, saying: “Why did you make us leave Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread, there is no water, and we are already disgusted by this miserable food ”. 6Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents against the people, which bit them; and a lot of people died in Israel. 7The people went to Moses and said, “We have sinned, speaking against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord to keep the serpents from us ”. Moses interceded for the people, 8 and the Lord replied: “Make a bronze serpent and place it as a sign on a pole; whoever is bitten and looks at it will live ”. 9 Moses made a bronze serpent and placed it as a sign on a pole. When someone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he was cured. - Word of the Lord.

Salmo 77/78
1. Escuta, ó meu povo, a minha Lei, / ouve atento as palavras que eu te digo; / abrirei a minha boca em parábolas, / os mistérios do passado lembrarei.

Psalm 77/78
Do not forget the works of the Lord, my people!
1. Listen, O my people, to my Law, / listen attentively to the words that I say to you; / I will open my mouth in parables, / the mysteries of the past I will remember.
2. When he wounded them, they then sought him out, / converted, running towards him; / remembered that the Lord is their rock / and that God, their redeemer, is the highest God.
3. But they only honored him with their lips / and lied to the Lord with their tongues; / their deceitful hearts were false / and, unfaithful, they broke the Covenant.
4. But the Lord, always kind and compassionate, / did not kill and forgive their sin; / how many times he dominated his wrath / and didn't let go of his fury.

Evangelho

Gospel
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John 3,13-17 - At that time, Jesus said to Nicodemus: 13 “No one went up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses raised the serpent in the desert, so it is necessary for the Son of Man to be raised, 15 so that all who believe in him may have eternal life. 16For God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son so that not everyone who believes in him may die, but has eternal life. 17 In fact, God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world may be saved by him ”. - Word of salvation.

To think about
Emperor Constantine had two basilicas built in Jerusalem, one on Golgotha (death of Jesus), and another on the Sepulcher of Jesus. The dedication of these basilicas took place on September 13, 335. The following day, remembering the profound significance of the two churches, the people were shown what remained of the wood of the Savior's Cross. This ritual is repeated annually. Hence the celebration of the 14th of September, which has also been held in Rome since the 7th century. “The cross is, at the same time, the suffering and the trophy of God. It is his suffering, because it was there that he voluntarily died; it is his triumph, because the devil was wounded and defeated and death was defeated with him. The cross is proclaimed as the glory of Christ and his exaltation… ”(Saint Andrew of Crete, 7th century).

Para assistir - To watch

To Pray
O Jesus Redeemer, to redeem and save us, you died crucified. You have thus changed the meaning of the cross: from an instrument of condemnation, you have transformed it into a throne of victory and rescue for humanity. Although it brings the memory of your unspeakable sufferings, the cross becomes a source of salvation for us. Amen.

Para os catequistas - Diretório para a Catequese

For catechists - Directory for Catechesis
241. Second childhood is also the stage of entry into the world of primary school. The child of preschool age, and then of school age, enters a larger community than the family, where he has the possibility to develop his intellectual, affective and relational abilities. In fact, in many countries of the world, specific religious education is given in the school and, in some cases, there is also the possibility of giving catechesis to initiate the Christian life and the sacraments in school, according to the instructions and provisions of the Local bishop. In these contexts, collaboration between catechists and teachers becomes a significant educational resource and is a favorable occasion to give visibility to a community of adult witnesses to the faith.
