Reflexão
Ao seguir para Jerusalém, Jesus corre sério risco de vida. Sabe que os chefes do povo estão ansiosos para capturá-lo. E o final já se prevê: prisão, condenação e morte. Jesus não se entrega à morte como algo inevitável ou fatal. Sua coerência de vida, seu pacto com a verdade, sua fidelidade aos planos do Pai, tudo isso o impele a prosseguir caminho. Eis que uma mulher desvia a atenção de Jesus para os filhos: quer para eles lugar de honra. O Mestre esclarece que vai entregar a vida por amor; enquanto a mãe fala de buscar segurança e posto importante para os filhos. Voltando-se para ela e seus dois filhos e para os demais discípulos, Jesus lhes esclarece o que significa segui-lo: assumir atitude de serviço na comunidade e entregar a própria vida por todos.

When he went to Jerusalem, Jesus was in serious danger of life. You know the chiefs of the people are eager to capture him. And the end is already foreseen: arrest, conviction and death. Jesus does not surrender to death as something inevitable or fatal. His consistency of life, his covenant with the truth, his fidelity to the Father's plans, all this impels him to continue his journey. Behold, a woman turneth away the attention of Jesus to her children: to them is a place of honor. The Master explains that he will give his life for love; while the mother speaks of seeking safety and important place for the children. Turning to her and her two sons and to the other disciples, Jesus clarifies to them what it means to follow him: to assume an attitude of service in the community and to lay down one's life for all.

Leitura do livro do profeta Jeremias 18,18-20 – Naqueles dias, 18disseram eles: “Vinde para conspirarmos juntos contra Jeremias; um sacerdote não deixará morrer a lei; nem um sábio, o conselho; nem um profeta, a palavra. Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus 20,17-28 – Naquele tempo, 17enquanto Jesus subia para Jerusalém, ele tomou os doze discípulos à parte e, durante a caminhada, disse-lhes: 18“Eis que estamos subindo para Jerusalém, e o Filho do homem será entregue aos sumos sacerdotes e aos mestres da lei. Eles o condenarão à morte 19e o entregarão aos pagãos para zombarem dele, para flagelá-lo e crucificá-lo.
