Numa de suas instruções aos discípulos, Jesus profere sua solene e revolucionária sentença: “Sejam misericordiosos, como o Pai de vocês é misericordioso”. Mais que um conselho, trata-se de séria exigência para os que querem fazer parte da comunidade de Jesus. Ser misericordioso é exercício para a vida inteira. Talvez por isso é que Jesus tenha acrescentado a necessidade de não julgar, não condenar, perdoar e ser generoso. Devemos ser compassivos, porque Deus é compassivo; devemos perdoar, porque Deus nos perdoa. À medida que crescemos e nos fortalecemos na vivência dessas virtudes, o Pai celeste nos socorre, pois “a mesma medida que vocês usarem para com os outros será usada para com vocês”.

In one of his instructions to the disciples, Jesus utters his solemn and revolutionary sentence: "Be merciful, as your Father is merciful." More than a council, it is a serious requirement for those who want to be part of the community of Jesus. Being merciful is exercise for a lifetime. Perhaps that is why Jesus added the need not to judge, not condemn, forgive, and be generous. We must be compassionate because God is compassionate; we must forgive, because God forgives us. As we grow and strengthen in the living of these virtues, the heavenly Father helps us, for "the same measure you use toward others will be used toward you."
