Último patriarca a receber comunicações via sonhos e declarado patrono da Igreja universal por Pio IX, São José é pai adotivo e guarda do menino Jesus e colocado como chefe da Família de Nazaré. Ele estabelece a ligação de Jesus à descendência de Davi. Os Evangelhos pouco falam de José. As poucas menções revelam que ele era carpinteiro, descendente da tribo de Davi, homem justo. Foi uma figura silenciosa, mas muito presente na infância e adolescência de Jesus. O episódio do encontro de Jesus no templo é o Evangelho proposto para esta solenidade. O relato mostra José acompanhando sua família até Jerusalém, mas o centro da narrativa é Jesus. Mesmo tendo pais terrenos, Jesus mostra, desde pequeno, sua relação filial com Deus, seu Pai. Interrogado pela mãe, ele responde que deve se preocupar com as coisas do seu Pai. Seguir a vontade de Deus pode significar ir além dos limitados horizontes da família. Jesus volta com sua família e convive com ela até o dia em que assumirá sua missão profética e missionária.

The last patriarch to receive communications through dreams and declared patron of the universal Church by Pius IX, Saint Joseph is an adoptive father and guardian of the child Jesus and placed as head of the Family of Nazareth. He establishes the connection of Jesus to the seed of David. The Gospels speak little of Joseph. The few mentions reveal that he was a carpenter, a descendant of the tribe of David, a righteous man. He was a silent figure, but very present in the childhood and adolescence of Jesus. The episode of Jesus' meeting in the temple is the Gospel proposed for this solemnity. The account shows Joseph accompanying his family to Jerusalem, but the center of the narrative is Jesus. Even when he has earthly parents, Jesus shows his filial relationship with God, his Father, from an early age. When asked by his mother, he responds that he must be concerned with his Father's things. Following the will of God may mean going beyond the limited horizons of family. Jesus returns with his family and lives with her until the day he takes up his prophetic and missionary mission.
