A oração de Jesus põe em destaque, antes de tudo, a familiaridade de chamar a Deus de “Pai”. Mostra também que Deus aprecia a simplicidade dos pedidos, sem longos discursos ou conclusões solenes. Afinal, ele conhece as necessidades mais profundas de cada filho ou filha. Depois, apresenta o conteúdo do que se deve pedir ao Pai: o seu nome, o seu reino, a sua vontade. Tudo isso antes de pedirmos por nossas necessidades cotidianas: o pão de cada dia, o perdão e a libertação do mal. O ensinamento de Jesus sobre a oração reforça ainda a necessidade de perdoar: sabendo que Deus nos perdoa e nos salva, também nós devemos perdoar as ofensas que outros nos fazem. O pai-nosso é oração breve, mas portadora dos elementos essenciais de nossa relação com Deus e com os irmãos.

The prayer of Jesus emphasizes, above all, the familiarity of calling God "Father." It also shows that God appreciates the simplicity of the requests, without long speeches or solemn conclusions. After all, he knows the deeper needs of each son or daughter. Then he presents the content of what should be asked of the Father: his name, his kingdom, his will. All this before we ask for our daily needs: daily bread, forgiveness and freedom from evil. Jesus' teaching on prayer further reinforces the need to forgive: knowing that God forgives us and saves us, we too must forgive the offenses that others do to us. The Our Father is a short prayer, but a bearer of the essential elements of our relationship with God and with our brothers and sisters.

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus 6,7-15 – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: 7“Quando orardes, não useis muitas palavras, como fazem os pagãos. Eles pensam que serão ouvidos por força das muitas palavras. 8Não sejais como eles, pois vosso Pai sabe do que precisais, muito antes que vós o peçais. 9Vós deveis rezar assim: Pai nosso que estás nos céus, santificado seja o teu nome; 10venha o teu reino; seja feita a tua vontade, assim na terra como nos céus. 11O pão nosso de cada dia dá-nos hoje. 12Perdoa as nossas ofensas, assim como nós perdoamos a quem nos tem ofendido. 13E não nos deixes cair em tentação, mas livra-nos do mal. 14De fato, se vós perdoardes aos homens as faltas que eles cometeram, vosso Pai que está nos céus também vos perdoará. 15Mas, se vós não perdoardes aos homens, vosso Pai também não perdoará as faltas que vós cometestes”. – Palavra da salvação.

The righteous cry, and the loving Lord listens and frees them from all distress. / From the troubled heart he is near / and comforts the dejected spirit.
