Leitura da profecia de Malaquias 3,1-4.23-24 – Assim fala o Senhor Deus: 1″Eis que envio meu anjo, e ele há de preparar o caminho para mim; logo chegará ao seu templo o dominador, que tentais encontrar, e o anjo da aliança, que desejais. Ei-lo que vem, diz o Senhor dos exércitos; 2e quem poderá fazer-lhe frente no dia de sua chegada? E quem poderá resistir-lhe quando ele aparecer? Ele é como o fogo da forja e como a barrela dos lavadeiros; 3e estará a postos, como para fazer derreter e purificar a prata: assim ele purificará os filhos de Levi e os refinará como ouro e como prata, e eles poderão assim fazer oferendas justas ao Senhor. 4Será então aceitável ao Senhor a oblação de Judá e de Jerusalém, como nos primeiros tempos e nos anos antigos. 23Eis que eu vos enviarei o profeta Elias, antes que venha o dia do Senhor, dia grande e terrível; 24o coração dos pais há de voltar-se para os filhos, e o coração dos filhos para seus pais, para que eu não intervenha, ferindo de maldição a vossa terra”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Malachi's prophecy reading 3,1-4.23-24 - Thus says the Lord God: 1 ″ Behold, I send my angel, and he will prepare the way for me; soon the dominator, whom you are trying to find, and the covenant angel, whom you desire, will arrive at his temple. Here it is, says the Lord of hosts; 2and who will be able to face you on the day of your arrival? And who will be able to resist him when he appears? Levantai vossa cabeça e olhai, / pois a vossa redenção se aproxima!
1. Mostrai-me, ó Senhor, vossos caminhos / e fazei-me conhecer a vossa estrada! / Vossa verdade me oriente e me conduza, / porque sois o Deus da minha salvação!
2. O Senhor é piedade e retidão / e reconduz ao bom caminho os pecadores. / Ele dirige os humildes na justiça, / e aos pobres ele ensina o seu caminho.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas 1,57-66 – 57Completou-se o tempo da gravidez de Isabel, e ela deu à luz um filho. 58Os vizinhos e parentes ouviram dizer como o Senhor tinha sido misericordioso para com Isabel e alegraram-se com ela. 59No oitavo dia, foram circuncidar o menino e queriam dar-lhe o nome de seu pai, Zacarias. 60A mãe, porém, disse: “Não! Ele vai chamar-se João”. 61Os outros disseram: “Não existe nenhum parente teu com esse nome!” 62Então fizeram sinais ao pai, perguntando como ele queria que o menino se chamasse. 63Zacarias pediu uma tabuinha e escreveu: “João é o seu nome”. 64No mesmo instante, a boca de Zacarias se abriu, sua língua se soltou e ele começou a louvar a Deus. 65Todos os vizinhos ficaram com medo, e a notícia espalhou-se por toda a região montanhosa da Judeia. 66E todos os que ouviam a notícia ficavam pensando: “O que virá a ser este menino?” De fato, a mão do Senhor estava com ele. – Palavra da salvação.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke 1,57-66 - 57The time of Elizabeth's pregnancy was completed, and she gave birth to a son. 58Neighbors and relatives heard how merciful the Lord had been to Elizabeth and rejoiced with her. 59On the eighth day, they went to circumcise the boy and wanted to name him after his father, Zechariah. 60The mother, however, said: “No! He will be called John”. The others said, "There is no relative of yours by that name!" 62Then they signaled the father, asking what he wanted the boy to be called. 63Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name." 64In that instant, Zechariah's mouth opened, his tongue loosened, and he began to praise God. All the neighbors were afraid, and the news spread throughout the mountainous region of Judea. 66And everyone who heard the news kept thinking, "What will this boy be?" In fact, the Lord's hand was with him. - Word of salvation.

Em casa de Zacarias nasce um menino. Há uma efusão de alegria por parte de vizinhos e parentes. Esse fato poderia ser considerado corriqueiro, mas foge da normalidade, por algumas circunstâncias. A mãe do recém-nascido é uma senhora idosa, Isabel. O nome do menino já vem recomendado ao pai pelo anjo do Senhor: “Sua esposa Isabel vai lhe dar um filho, e você lhe dará o nome de João”, que significa “Deus se compadece”. Ao escrever numa tabuinha o nome do filho, Zacarias, então mudo, recomeça a falar fluentemente, louvando a Deus. Por isso, a extraordinária notícia se espalha pela região montanhosa da Judeia. Tomados de temor, todos guardam essas coisas em seus corações e reconhecem que “a mão do Senhor estava sobre” o pequeno João.

A boy is born in Zacarias's house. There is an outpouring of joy from neighbors and relatives. This fact could be considered commonplace, but it is out of the ordinary, for some circumstances. The mother of the newborn is an elderly woman, Isabel. The boy's name is already recommended to the father by the angel of the Lord: "Your wife Isabel will give you a son, and you will give him the name of John", which means "God is compassionate". When writing the name of his son on a tablet, Zacarias, then dumb, starts speaking fluently again, praising God. For this reason, the extraordinary news spreads throughout the mountainous region of Judea. Out of fear, everyone keeps these things in their hearts and recognizes that "the hand of the Lord was over" little John.

O Jesus Messiah, the birth of Your forerunner, John the Baptist, brought immense joy to Elizabeth's relatives and neighbors, for they recognized that God had used mercy on her. Teach us, Lord, to respect and value every baby that comes to our world. Amen.
