Leitura do livro do Gênesis – 5 Abraão tinha cem anos quando lhe nasceu o filho Isaac. 8 Entretanto, o menino cresceu e foi desmamado; e no dia em que o menino foi desmamado, Abraão deu um grande banquete. 9 Sara, porém, viu o filho que a egípcia Agar dera a Abraão brincando com Isaac. 10 E
disse a Abraão: “Manda embora essa escrava e seu filho, pois o filho de
uma escrava não pode ser herdeiro com o meu filho Isaac”. 11 Abraão ficou muito desgostoso com isso, por se tratar de um filho seu. 12 Mas
Deus lhe disse: “Não te aflijas por causa do menino e da tua escrava.
Atende a tudo o que Sara te pedir, pois é por Isaac que uma descendência
levará o teu nome. 13 Mas do filho da escrava farei também um grande povo, por ele ser da tua raça”. 14 Abraão
levantou-se de manhã, tomou pão e um odre de água e os deu a Agar,
colocando-os nos ombros dela; depois, entregou-lhe o menino e
despediu-a. Ela foi-se embora e andou vagueando pelo deserto de
Bersabeia. 15 Tendo acabado a água do odre, largou o menino debaixo de um arbusto 16 e
foi sentar-se em frente dele, à distância de um tiro de arco. Pois
dizia consigo: “Não quero ver o menino morrer”. Assim, ficou sentada
defronte ao menino e pôs-se a gritar e a chorar. 17 Deus ouviu
o grito do menino e o anjo de Deus chamou do céu a Agar, dizendo: “Que
tens, Agar? Não tenhas medo, pois Deus ouviu a voz do menino do lugar em
que está. 18 Levanta-te, toma o menino e segura-o bem pela mão, porque farei dele um grande povo”. 19 Deus abriu-lhe os olhos, e ela viu um poço de água. Foi então encher o odre e deu de beber ao menino. 20 Deus estava com o menino, que cresceu e habitou no deserto, tornando-se um jovem arqueiro. – Palavra do Senhor.

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, 28 quando Jesus chegou à outra margem do lago, na região dos gadarenos, vieram ao seu encontro dois homens possuídos pelo demônio, saindo dos túmulos. Eram tão violentos, que ninguém podia passar por aquele caminho. 29 Eles então gritaram: “O que tens a ver conosco, Filho de Deus? Tu vieste aqui para nos atormentar antes do tempo?” 30 Ora, a certa distância deles, estava pastando uma grande manada de porcos. 31 Os demônios suplicavam-lhe: “Se nos expulsas, manda-nos para a manada de porcos”. 32 Jesus disse: “Ide”. Os demônios saíram e foram para os porcos. E logo toda a manada atirou-se monte abaixo para dentro do mar, afogando-se nas águas. 33 Os homens que guardavam os porcos fugiram e, indo até a cidade, contaram tudo, inclusive o caso dos possuídos pelo demônio. 34 Então a cidade toda saiu ao encontro de Jesus. Quando o viram, pediram-lhe que se retirasse da região deles. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel - Mateus 8,28-34

Refletindo o Evangelho
Entrar em território pagão é sempre um desafio; não se sabe o que se
vai enfrentar. Jesus encontra um mundo dominado por escravidão e
violência. A presença de Jesus é séria ameaça contra essa deplorável
situação: “Vieste aqui para nos perder?”. Entre o mal (demônio) e o bem
(Jesus) não pode haver acordo. Ao dizer: “se nos expulsas”, os possessos
sabem que Jesus tem poder sobre as forças malignas. De fato, Jesus
reverte esse quadro, derrotando os poderes do mal que agem no meio dos
pagãos. Ao perder seus rebanhos, os gadarenos ficam zangados com Jesus e
o afastam como indesejável. É o engano de quem valoriza mais os bens
materiais do que a vida humana. Outra aplicação: nosso interior é um
espaço ainda desconhecido, povoado de “demônios” que precisam ser
expulsos para sermos salvos plenamente.
