Leitura da profecia de Sofonias 3,14-18 – 14Canta de alegria, cidade de Sião; rejubila, povo de Israel! Alegra-te e exulta de todo o coração, cidade de Jerusalém! 15O Senhor revogou a sentença contra ti, afastou teus inimigos. O rei de Israel é o Senhor, ele está no meio de ti, nunca mais temerás o mal. 16Naquele dia se dirá a Jerusalém: “Não temas, Sião; não te deixes levar pelo desânimo! 17O Senhor, teu Deus, está no meio de ti, o valente guerreiro que te salva; ele exultará de alegria por ti, movido por amor; exultará por ti, entre louvores, 18como nos dias de festa”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Reading of the prophecy of Zephaniah 3: 14-18 - 14 A joyful city of Zion; rejoice, O people of Israel! Rejoice and rejoice with all your heart, O city of Jerusalem! 15 The Lord hath turned back the sentence against thee, and hast cut off thine enemies. Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas 3,10-18 – Naquele tempo, 10as multidões perguntavam a João: “Que devemos fazer?” 11João respondia: “Quem tiver duas túnicas dê uma a quem não tem; e quem tiver comida faça o mesmo!” 12Foram também para o batismo cobradores de impostos e perguntaram a João: “Mestre, que devemos fazer?” 13João respondeu: “Não cobreis mais do que foi estabelecido”. 14Havia também soldados que perguntavam: “E nós, que devemos fazer?” João respondia: “Não tomeis à força dinheiro de ninguém nem façais falsas acusações; ficai satisfeitos com o vosso salário!” 15O povo estava na expectativa e todos se perguntavam no seu íntimo se João não seria o Messias. 16Por isso, João declarou a todos: “Eu vos batizo com água, mas virá aquele que é mais forte do que eu. Eu não sou digno de desamarrar a correia de suas sandálias. Ele vos batizará no Espírito Santo e no fogo. 17Ele virá com a pá na mão: vai limpar sua eira e recolher o trigo no celeiro; mas a palha, ele a queimará no fogo que não se apaga”. 18E ainda de muitos outros modos João anunciava ao povo a boa-nova. – Palavra da salvação.

Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke 3, 10-18 - At that time, the multitudes asked John, "What shall we do?" 11John answered, "Whoever has two coats give one to him who has not; and whoever has food do the same! Refletindo o Evangelho 

João Batista aparece anunciando a vinda de Jesus e aponta a maneira prática de recebê-lo. A pergunta que não pode faltar é esta: o que devemos fazer? João estabelece um compromisso a cada grupo que o procura. João diz que a melhor maneira de preparar o caminho para Jesus é empenhar-se por uma sociedade solidária, justa e não violenta. Ao povo que o procura, João diz que é necessário ser solidário com os necessitados: quem tem repartir com quem não tem. A partilha é fundamental para que aconteça a justiça divina e todos tenham condições de uma vida digna. Aos cobradores de impostos, João os convida a praticar a justiça: não cobrar além do estabelecido. A honestidade e a ética não podem ser esquecidas em nenhuma e qualquer administração, seja pública ou privada. Aos soldados, João responde que é preciso não agir com violência: não maltratar com violência nem fazer acusações falsas. A violência e a força opressora nunca foram solução para a paz. Abuso do poder e acusação falsa destroem a fraternidade comunitária e a democracia de um povo. João propõe a conversão pessoal, mas principalmente a conversão social: as injustiças que acontecem contra os direitos dos pobres e dos indefesos.

Reflecting the Gospel 

John the Baptist appears announcing the coming of Jesus and points out the practical way of receiving him. The question that must be answered is this: what should we do? John establishes a commitment to each group that seeks it. John says that the best way to prepare the way for Jesus is to strive for a society of solidarity, justice and non-violence. To the people who seek him, John says that it is necessary to be in solidarity with the needy: who has to share with those who do not have. Sharing is essential if divine justice is to happen and everyone is able to live a dignified life. To tax collectors, John invites them to practice justice: not to charge beyond what is established. Honesty and ethics can not be forgotten in any and all administration, whether public or private. To the soldiers, John responds that it is necessary not to act with violence: do not mistreat with violence or make false accusations. Violence and oppressive force have never been a solution to peace. Abuse of power and false accusation destroy community fraternity and the democracy of a people. John proposes personal conversion, but especially social conversion: the injustices that happen against the rights of the poor and the defenseless.
