Muitos virão do Oriente e do Ocidente, e se sentaróo à mesa junto com Abraão, Isaac e Jacó. + Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo São Mateus 8,5-17 - Naquele tempo: 5Quando Jesus entrou em Cafarnaum, um oficial romano aproximou-se dele, suplicando: 6'Senhor, o meu empregado está de cama, lá em casa, sofrendo terrivelmente com uma paralisia.' 7Jesus respondeu: 'Vou curá-lo.' 8O oficial disse: 'Senhor, eu não sou digno de que entres em minha casa. Dize uma só palavra e o meu empregado ficará curado. 9Pois eu também sou subordinado e tenho soldados debaixo de minhas ordens. E digo a um : 'Vai!', e ele vai; e a outro: 'Vem!', e ele vem; e digo ao meu escravo: 'Faze isto!', e ele faz.' 10Quando ouviu isso, Jesus ficou admirado, e disse aos que o seguiam: 'Em verdade, vos digo: nunca encontrei em Israel alguém que tivesse tanta fé. 11Eu vos digo: muitos virão do Oriente e do Ocidente, e se sentarão à mesa no Reino dos Céus, junto com Abraão, Isaac e Jacó, 12enquanto os herdeiros do Reino serão jogados para fora, nas trevas, onde haverá choro e ranger de dentes.' 13Então, Jesus disse ao oficial: 'Vai! e seja feito como tu creste.' E naquela mesma hora o empregado ficou curado. 14Entrando Jesus na casa de Pedro, viu a sogra dele deitada e com febre. 15Tocou-lhe a mão, e a febre a deixou. Ela se levantou, e pôs-se a servi-lo. 16Quando caiu a tarde, levaram a Jesus muitas pessoas possuídas pelo demônio. Ele expulsou os espíritos, com sua palavra, e curou todos os doentes, 17para que se cumprisse o que foi dito pelo profeta Isaías: 'Ele tomou as nossas dores e carregou as nossas enfermidades.' Palavra da Salvação.

She got up and started to serve him. 16When evening fell, many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He expelled the spirits, with his word, and healed all the sick, 17 so that what was said by the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled: 'He took our pains and carried our sicknesses.' Word of Salvation.

Reflexão

Hoje, no Evangelho, vemos o amor, a fé, a confiança e a humildade de um centurião, que estima profundamente o seu criado. Preocupa-se tanto por ele, que é capaz de humilhar-se ante Jesus e pedir-lhe: "Senhor, o meu criado está de cama, lá em casa, paralisado e sofrendo demais". Esta solicitação pelos outros, especialmente por um criado, obtém de Jesus uma rápida resposta: Ele respondeu: "Vou curá-lo". E tudo desemboca numa serie de atos de fé e de confiança. O centurião não se considera digno e, ao lado deste sentimento, manifesta sua fé diante de Jesus e de todos os que estavam ali presentes, de tal maneira que Jesus diz: Ao ouvir isso, Jesus ficou admirado e disse aos que o estavam seguindo: "Em verdade, vos digo: em ninguém em Israel encontrei tanta fé".

Reflection

Today, in the Gospel, we see the love, faith, trust and humility of a centurion, who deeply values his servant. She cares so much for him that she is able to humble herself before Jesus and ask him: "Lord, my servant is in bed, at home, paralyzed and suffering too much". This request by others, especially by a servant, gets a quick response from Jesus: He replied: "I will heal you". And it all ends in a series of acts of faith and trust. The centurion does not consider himself worthy and, beside this feeling, he manifests his faith in front of Jesus and all those present, in such a way that Jesus says: Upon hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those who were following him: "Truly, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found so much faith".

Vivei em nós, Jesus, pelo vosso Espírito, para que vos amemos com todo o nosso ser e amemos o próximo como a nós mesmos no vosso amor. Fazei crescer em nós esse amor para que um dia, ressuscitados, partilhemos convosco a alegria do Reino dos céus.
