Joaquim and Ana, maternal grandparents of Jesus.
A tradição, com base no Protoevangelho de Tiago (século II) nos oferece os nomes: Joaquim, que significa “Deus concede” e Ana, “graça”. No Oriente, o culto a São Joaquim e Sant’Ana começou bem cedo, ao lado do culto à filha deles, Maria, a mãe de Jesus. No Ocidente, só mais tarde, no século XVI, espalhou-se a devoção aos avós maternos de Jesus. “Vocês os reconhecerão pelos frutos deles”, dizia Jesus (cf. Mt 7,20). Ora, o fruto de Joaquim e Ana é Maria, a “bendita entre as mulheres” (Lc 1,42). A ela todas as gerações “chamarão de bem-aventurada” (Lc 1,48). Bem-aventurados são também seus pais, que a introduziram no caminho da fé de Abraão e a prepararam para ser a mãe do Salvador, Jesus Cristo.

The tradition, based on the Protogospel of James (II century) offers us the names: Joaquim, which means "God grants" and Ana, "Grace". In the Orient, the cult of St. Joachim and Sant'Ana began very early, alongside the cult of their daughter, Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the West, only later in the 16TH century, the devotion to the maternal grandparents of Jesus spread. "You will recognize them by their fruits," Jesus said (cf. Mt 7.20). Now, the fruit of Joaquim and Anne is Mary, the "Blessed among women" (Lk 1.42). To it all generations will "call it Blessed" (Lk 1.48). Blessed are also their fathers, who introduced her in the path of Abraham's faith and prepared her to be the mother of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
