Anyone who wants to become great becomes your server.

Na lista dos apóstolos, Tiago, filho de Zebedeu, aparece ao lado de seu irmão, João. Juntamente com Pedro e João, ele está presente no momento da Transfiguração de Jesus e de sua agonia, no horto das Oliveiras. Segundo os Atos dos Apóstolos, por volta do ano 44, Herodes Antipas “começou a perseguir alguns membros da Igreja e mandou matar à espada Tiago, irmão de João” (At 12,1-2). “Ele, que inicialmente tinha pedido, por meio de sua mãe, para sentar com o irmão ao lado do Mestre, no Reino, foi justamente o primeiro a beber o cálice da paixão” (Bento XVI). Antiga tradição refere que as relíquias de São Tiago foram levadas para Compostela, Espanha, lugar que se tornou objeto de grande veneração e continua sendo meta de numerosas peregrinações procedentes do mundo todo.

In the list of the apostles, James, son of Zebedeu, appears alongside his brother, John. Together with Peter and John, he is present at the time of the Transfiguration of Jesus and his agony, in the garden of the olives. According to the Acts of the Apostles, around the year 44, Herod Antipas "began to pursue some members of the church and had to kill the sword James, brother of John" (Acts 12.1-2). "He, who had initially asked, through his mother, to sit with his brother alongside the master in the Kingdom, was rightly the first to drink the Chalice of Passion" (Benedict XVI). Ancient tradition mentions that the relics of St. James were taken to Compostela, Spain, a place that became the object of great veneration and continues to be the goal of numerous pilgridents from all over the world.

Leitura da segunda carta de são Paulo aos Coríntios 4,7-15 – Irmãos, 7trazemos esse tesouro em vasos de barro, para que todos reconheçam que esse poder extraordinário vem de Deus e não de nós. 8Somos afligidos de todos os lados, mas não vencidos pela angústia; postos entre os maiores apuros, mas sem perder a esperança; 9perseguidos, mas não desamparados; derrubados, mas não aniquilados; 10por toda parte e sempre, levamos em nós mesmos os sofrimentos mortais de Jesus, para que também a vida de Jesus seja manifestada em nossos corpos. 11De fato, nós, os vivos, somos continuamente entregues à morte por causa de Jesus, para que também a vida de Jesus seja manifestada em nossa natureza mortal. 12Assim, a morte age em nós, enquanto a vida age em vós. 13Mas, sustentados pelo mesmo espírito de fé, conforme o que está escrito: “Eu creio e, por isso, falei”, nós também cremos e, por isso, falamos, 14certos de que aquele que ressuscitou o Senhor Jesus nos ressuscitará também com Jesus e nos colocará ao seu lado, juntamente convosco. 15E tudo isso é por causa de vós, para que a abundância da graça em um número maior de pessoas faça crescer a ação de graças para a glória de Deus. – Palavra do Senhor.

Por acaso podeis beber o cálice que eu vou beber?” Eles responderam: “Podemos”. 23Então Jesus lhes disse: “De fato, vós bebereis do meu cálice, mas não depende de mim conceder o lugar à minha direita ou à minha esquerda. Meu Pai é quem dará esses lugares àqueles para os quais ele os preparou”. 24Quando os outros dez discípulos ouviram isso, ficaram irritados contra os dois irmãos. 25Jesus, porém, chamou-os e disse: “Vós sabeis que os chefes das nações têm poder sobre elas e os grandes as oprimem. 26Entre vós não deverá ser assim. Quem quiser tornar-se grande torne-se vosso servidor; 27quem quiser ser o primeiro seja vosso servo. 28Pois o Filho do homem não veio para ser servido, mas para servir e dar a sua vida como resgate em favor de muitos”. – Palavra da salvação.
