Tu és Pedro, e sobre esta pedra construirei a minha Igreja
You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church

Evangelho - Mateus 16,13-19

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, ¹³Jesus foi à região de Cesareia de Filipe e ali perguntou aos seus discípulos: “Quem dizem os homens ser o Filho do homem?” ¹⁴Eles responderam: “Alguns dizem que é João Batista; outros, que é Elias; outros, ainda, que é Jeremias ou algum dos profetas”. ¹⁵Então Jesus lhes perguntou: “E vós, quem dizeis que eu sou?” ¹⁶Simão Pedro respondeu: “Tu és o Messias, o Filho do Deus vivo”. ¹⁷Respondendo, Jesus lhe disse: “Feliz és tu, Simão, filho de Jonas, porque não foi um ser humano que te revelou isso, mas o meu Pai que está no céu. ¹⁸Por isso eu te digo que tu és Pedro, e sobre esta pedra construirei a minha Igreja, e o poder do inferno nunca poderá vencê-la. ¹⁹Eu te darei as chaves do reino dos céus: tudo o que tu ligares na terra será ligado nos céus; tudo o que tu desligares na terra será desligado nos céus”. – Palavra da salvação.

Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ According to Matthew - At that time, Jesus went to the region of Caesarea Philippi and asked his disciples: "Who do men say to be the Son of Man?" 14They answered, "Some say John the Baptist; others, which is Elijah; others, still, that it is Jeremiah or some of the prophets. " 15Then Jesus asked them, "Who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." 17In answering, Jesus said to him, "Happy are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for it was not a human being who revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18Therefore I say unto thee, Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the power of hell shall not be able to overcome it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in the heavens; whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Refletindo o Evangelho

Cátedra é o símbolo da autoridade e do magistério do bispo, e catedral é a igreja-mãe da diocese, sede permanente do pastor. A cátedra de São Pedro é o reconhecimento de sua autoridade sobre a Igreja: “Você é Pedro, e sobre esta pedra construirei a minha igreja”. Essa investidura dada por Jesus foi reforçada depois da ressurreição: “Alimente os meus cordeiros… Alimente as minhas ovelhas” (Jo 21,15.17). Os evangelhos fazem inúmeras referências a Pedro, mas são escassas as informações sobre seu ministério em Jerusalém, em Antioquia da Síria e em Roma. Entretanto, sua presença e martírio em Roma são comprovados por  muitos  estudiosos.  A  autoridade de Pedro (e de seus sucessores, os papas) se expressa pelo serviço, à semelhança do Mestre e Pastor, que veio para servir e não para ser servido.

Reflecting the Gospel

Chair is the symbol of authority and magisterium of the bishop, and cathedral is the mother church of the diocese, permanent seat of the pastor. The chair of St. Peter is the recognition of his authority over the Church: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church." This endowment given by Jesus was reinforced after the resurrection: "Feed my lambs ... Feed my sheep" (Jn 21: 15-17). The Gospels make numerous references to Peter, but information about his ministry in Jerusalem, Antioch of Syria, and Rome is scarce. However, his presence and martyrdom in Rome are proven by many scholars. Peter's authority (and his successors, the popes) is expressed by service, like the Master and Shepherd, who came to serve rather than to be served.
