Há muito tempo elas teriam feito penitência.

Evangelho - Mateus 11,20-24

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, ²⁰Jesus começou a censurar as cidades onde fora realizada a maior parte de seus milagres, porque não se tinham convertido. ²¹“Ai de ti, Corazim! Ai de ti, Betsaida! Porque, se os milagres que se realizaram no meio de vós tivessem sido feitos em Tiro e Sidônia, há muito tempo elas teriam feito penitência, vestindo-se de cilício e cobrindo-se de cinza. ²²Pois bem! Eu vos digo, no dia do julgamento, Tiro e Sidônia serão tratadas com menos dureza do que vós. ²³E tu, Cafarnaum! Acaso serás erguida até o céu? Não! Serás jogada no inferno! Porque, se os milagres que foram realizados no meio de ti tivessem sido feitos em Sodoma, ela existiria até hoje! ²⁴Eu, porém, vos digo, no dia do juízo, Sodoma será tratada com menos dureza do que vós!” – Palavra da salvação.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ According to Matthew - At that time, Jesus began to censor the cities where most of his miracles had taken place, because they had not become. 21 "Woe to you, Chorazim! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles which were done in the midst of you were done in Tire and Sidon, they would have done penance for a long time, putting on sackcloth and covering themselves with ashes. Well then! I tell you, on the day of judgment, Tire and Sidon will be treated less harshly than you. 23And you, Capernaum! Will you be raised up to heaven? No! You will be thrown into hell! For if the miracles which were done in the midst of thee had been done in Sodom, it would have existed unto this day! 24 But I say unto you, in the day of judgment, Sodom shall be treated with less harshness than you! "- Word of salvation.

Refletindo o Evangelho

Jesus se lamenta amargamente de algumas cidades que não acolheram sua presença libertadora nem deixaram o caminho do erro. Mesmo tendo Jesus feito aí “a maioria de seus milagres”, seus moradores não se converteram. Diriam os profetas: tinham olhos para ver e não viram, ouvidos para ouvir e não ouviram. Sua dureza de coração era pior que a dos habitantes de Tiro, Sidônia e Sodoma. Aquelas cidades não experimentaram a presença do Salvador; estas sim, e por isso serão julgadas com grande rigor. As palavras de Jesus, porém, não indicam condenação final; são graves advertências para que as pessoas se voltem para Deus. Ainda há tempo. Cada um de nós pode se perguntar: estou crescendo na fé e nas boas obras conforme os apelos que me vêm Palavra de Deus, das orações e da vida sacramental?

Reflecting the Gospel

Jesus laments bitterly of some cities that did not welcome his liberating presence nor did they leave the path of error. Even though Jesus did "most of his miracles" there, his people did not convert. The prophets would say: they had eyes to see and did not see, ears to hear and they did not hear. His hardness of heart was worse than that of the inhabitants of Tire, Sidon, and Sodom. Those cities did not experience the presence of the Savior; these, and therefore will be judged with great rigor. The words of Jesus, however, do not indicate final condemnation; are grave warnings for people to turn to God. There is still time. Each of us may ask ourselves: am I growing in faith and good works according to the appeals that come to me, the Word of God, the prayers and the sacramental life?

O Senhor estabelece sua cidade para sempre. Grande é o Senhor e muito digno de louvores / na cidade onde ele mora; / seu monte santo, esta colina encantadora / é a alegria do universo. Monte Sião, no extremo norte situado, / és a mansão do grande rei! / Deus revelou-se, em suas fortes cidadelas, / um refúgio poderoso. The Lord establishes His city forever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city where he dwelleth; / your holy hill, this lovely hill / is the joy of the universe. Mount Zion, in the far north, / is the mansion of the great king! / God has revealed himself, in his strong citadels, / a powerful refuge. For behold, the kings of the earth have allied themselves, and they have all advanced together; / When they saw it, they trembled with fear, / They stammered in confusion. Like the pains of the woman in childbirth, an anguish invaded them; / similar to the impetuous east wind, / that shatters the ships of Tarshish. Psalm 47/48.
