Evangelho - Mateus 8,28-34

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, ²⁸quando Jesus chegou à outra margem do lago, na região dos gadarenos, vieram ao seu encontro dois homens possuídos pelo demônio, saindo dos túmulos. Eram tão violentos, que ninguém podia passar por aquele caminho. ²⁹Eles então gritaram: “O que tens a ver conosco, Filho de Deus? Tu vieste aqui para nos atormentar antes do tempo?” ³⁰Ora, a certa distância deles, estava pastando uma grande manada de porcos. ³¹Os demônios suplicavam-lhe: “Se nos expulsas, manda-nos para a manada de porcos”. ³²Jesus disse: “Ide”. Os demônios saíram e foram para os porcos. E logo toda a manada atirou-se monte abaixo para dentro do mar, afogando-se nas águas. ³³Os homens que guardavam os porcos fugiram e, indo até a cidade, contaram tudo, inclusive o caso dos possuídos pelo demônio. ³⁴Então a cidade toda saiu ao encontro de Jesus. Quando o viram, pediram-lhe que se retirasse da região deles. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel - Matthew 8,28-34

Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew - At that time, when Jesus reached the other side of the lake in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men came to meet him, coming out of the tombs. They were so violent that no one could go that way. 29 Then they cried out, "What have you to do with us, Son of God? Did you come here to torment us ahead of time? "At some distance from them a large herd of pigs was grazing. 31The devils begged him, "If you drive us out, send us to the herd of pigs." 32 Jesus said, "Go." The demons went out and went to the pigs. And soon the whole herd threw itself down the hill into the sea, drowning in the waters. 33The men who guarded the swine fled, and went to the city and told them everything, including the case of those possessed by the devil. 34And the whole city went out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they asked him to withdraw from their region. - Word of salvation.

Refletindo o Evangelho

O fato se dá em território pagão. Tendo vindo para libertar a todos, Jesus ultrapassa as fronteiras de Israel. Depara-se com uma cena desumana: vêm ao seu encontro dois endemoninhados que moravam no cemitério e aterrorizavam os passantes. Jesus enfrenta a situação deplorável. Dá ordem para que os demônios voltem para o mundo da impureza, simbolizado pelos porcos, animais considerados impuros pelos judeus. Os porcos eram também símbolo do poder militar, religioso e comercial romano. O Reino de Deus derruba a pretensão desses poderes sobre o povo. Enquanto os dois homens celebram o poder libertador de Jesus, os moradores da região o expulsam como indesejável. Mais preocupados com o dinheiro e seus negócios do que com a vida humana, eles não acolhem a presença transformadora de Jesus.

Reflecting the Gospel

The fact is in pagan territory. Having come to deliver all, Jesus goes beyond the borders of Israel. There is an inhuman scene: two demon-possessed men who live in the cemetery come to meet them and terrorize the passers-by. Jesus faces the deplorable situation. It commands the demons to return to the world of uncleanness, symbolized by the pigs, animals considered impure by the Jews. Pigs were also a symbol of Roman military, religious and commercial power. The Kingdom of God overthrows the pretension of these powers over the people. While the two men celebrate the liberating power of Jesus, the inhabitants of the region expel him as undesirable. More concerned with money and their business than with human life, they do not welcome the transforming presence of Jesus.

A todos os que procedem retamente / eu mostrarei a salvação que vem de Deus. “Escuta, ó meu povo, eu vou falar; † ouve, Israel, eu testemunho contra ti: / eu, o Senhor, somente eu, sou o teu Deus! Eu não venho censurar teus sacrifícios, / pois sempre estão perante mim teus holocaustos; / não preciso dos novilhos de tua casa / nem dos carneiros que estão nos teus rebanhos. To all who do right / I will show the salvation that comes from God. "Listen, O my people, I will speak; † Hear, O Israel, I testify against thee: / I the Lord, I alone am thy God! I do not come to reproach your sacrifices, / for your burnt offerings are always before me; / I need not the bullocks of thy house, nor the rams that are in thy flocks. Because the beasts of the forest belong to me / and the animals that are in the hills by the thousands. / I know the birds that fly through the heavens / and the living things that move through the fields. I would not tell you, if I were hungry, / because the universe and all beings are mine. Shall I eat the flesh of bulls? / Will I drink the blood of rams? How dare you repeat my precepts / and bring my covenant in your mouth? / You who hated my laws and my counsels / and turned my back on the words of my lips! Psalm 49/50.
