Evangelho - Mateus 8,5-17

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, ⁵quando Jesus entrou em Cafarnaum, um oficial romano aproximou-se dele, suplicando: ⁶“Senhor, o meu empregado está de cama, lá em casa, sofrendo terrivelmente com uma paralisia”. ⁷Jesus respondeu: “Vou curá-lo”. ⁸O oficial disse: “Senhor, eu não sou digno de que entres em minha casa. Dize uma só palavra, e o meu empregado ficará curado. ⁹Pois eu também sou subordinado e tenho soldados debaixo de minhas ordens. E digo a um: ‘Vai!’, e ele vai; e a outro: ‘Vem!’, e ele vem; e digo ao meu escravo: ‘Faze isto!’, e ele faz”. ¹⁰Quando ouviu isso, Jesus ficou admirado e disse aos que o seguiam: “Em verdade vos digo, nunca encontrei em Israel alguém que tivesse tanta fé. ¹¹Eu vos digo, muitos virão do oriente e do ocidente e se sentarão à mesa no reino dos céus, junto com Abraão, Isaac e Jacó, ¹²enquanto os herdeiros do reino serão jogados para fora, nas trevas, onde haverá choro e ranger de dentes”. ¹³Então, Jesus disse ao oficial: “Vai! E seja feito como tu creste”. E naquela mesma hora o empregado ficou curado. ¹⁴Entrando Jesus na casa de Pedro, viu a sogra dele deitada e com febre. ¹⁵Tocou-lhe a mão, e a febre a deixou. Ela se levantou e pôs-se a servi-lo. ¹⁶Quando caiu a tarde, levaram a Jesus muitas pessoas possuídas pelo demônio. Ele expulsou os espíritos com sua palavra e curou todos os doentes, ¹⁷para que se cumprisse o que foi dito pelo profeta Isaías: “Ele tomou as nossas dores e carregou as nossas enfermidades”. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel - Matthew 8,5-17

Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew - At that time, when Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman officer approached him, pleading: 6 "Lord, my servant is bedridden, in the house, suffering terribly with a paralysis." 7Jesus answered, "I will heal him." The officer said, "Lord, I am not worthy that you should come into my house. Say a word, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I am also a subordinate, and I have soldiers under my orders. And I say to one, 'Go!' And he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and I say to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does. " 10And when he heard this, Jesus was astonished, and said to them that followed him, Verily I say unto you, I have not found in Israel any that hath such faith. 11I tell you, many will come from the east and from the west and will sit at the table in the kingdom of heaven with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, 12 while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth " . 13Then Jesus said to the officer, "Go! And be done as thou hast believed. " And at that hour the servant was healed. 14When Jesus was brought into Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying down with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her. She got up and began to serve him. 16 When evening came, many people possessed by the devil were brought to Jesus. He cast out the spirits with his word and healed all the sick, 17to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: "He took our sorrows and borne our infirmities." - Word of salvation.

Refletindo o Evangelho

Um centurião, no exército romano, comandava cem soldados. Não pertencia ao povo de Israel. Sabendo que qualquer judeu observante não podia entrar em sua casa, pede que Jesus cure, à distância, o seu criado. E o faz com profunda fé e humildade: “Eu não sou digno”. Pela fé, altamente elogiada pelo Senhor, ele entra na comunidade cristã. Os pagãos chegam para fazer parte da comunidade de Jesus, ao passo que os “filhos do reino” (povo de Israel) afastam-se da luz (o próprio Jesus) e se perdem na escuridão. Jesus toma a inciativa e, sem proferir palavras, segura a mão da sogra de Pedro, “e a febre a deixou”. Imediatamente “ela se levantou e começou a servi-lo”. Com uma palavra, Jesus cura ainda numerosos outros enfermos: “Ele assumiu nossas fraquezas e carregou nossas doenças” (cf. Is 53,4).
 
Reflecting the Gospel

A centurion, in the Roman army, commanded a hundred soldiers. It did not belong to the people of Israel. Knowing that any observant Jew could not enter his house, he asks Jesus to heal, at a distance, his servant. And he does so with deep faith and humility: "I am not worthy." By faith, highly praised by the Lord, he enters the Christian community. Pagans come to be part of the community of Jesus, while the "children of the kingdom" (people of Israel) move away from the light (Jesus himself) and are lost in the darkness. Jesus takes the initiative and, without uttering words, takes the hand of Peter's mother-in-law, "and the fever left her." Immediately "she arose and began to serve him." In one word, Jesus heals numerous other sick people: "He has taken our infirmities and carried our diseases" (cf. Is 53,4).

Não esqueçais até o fim / a humilhação dos vossos pobres. Ó Senhor, por que razão nos rejeitastes para sempre / e vos irais contra as ovelhas do rebanho que guiais? / Recordai-vos deste povo que outrora adquiristes, † desta tribo que remistes para ser a vossa herança / e do monte de Sião que escolhestes por morada! Dirigi-vos até lá para ver quanta ruína: / no santuário o inimigo destruiu todas as coisas; / e, rugindo como feras, no local das grandes festas, / lá puseram suas bandeiras vossos ímpios inimigos. Salmo 73/74.

Rezando

Do not forget until the end / humiliation of your poor. O Lord, why hast Thou forsaken us forever, and ye are against the sheep of the flock which Thou guidesest? / Remember this people whom you formerly acquired, † of this tribe which you have redeemed to be your inheritance, and of the hill of Zion which you have chosen for an abode. Go ye there to see how much ruin: / in the sanctuary the enemy destroyed all things; / and, roaring like beasts, in the place of the great feasts, / there they laid their banners your wicked enemies. They looked like lumberjacks knocking down a forest, or breaking their doors with hammers and mallets. O Lord, they set fire to your sanctuary! They have desecrated the place where you dwell! Remember your covenant! The measure overflowed, / because in the dens of this land there is only violence! May the humble and the small not hide themselves ashamed, but let the poor and the destitute glorify your name. Psalm 73/74.
