“Arise, take up thy bed and walk”

Evangelho - João 5,1-16

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – ¹Houve uma festa dos judeus, e Jesus foi a Jerusalém. ²Existe em Jerusalém, perto da porta das Ovelhas, uma piscina com cinco pórticos, chamada Betesda em hebraico. ³Muitos doentes ficavam ali deitados: cegos, coxos e paralíticos. ⁴De fato, um anjo descia, de vez em quando, e movimentava a água da piscina, e o primeiro doente que aí entrasse, depois do borbulhar da água, ficava curado de qualquer doença que tivesse. ⁵Aí se encontrava um homem que estava doente havia trinta e oito anos. ⁶Jesus viu o homem deitado e, sabendo que estava doente há tanto tempo, disse-lhe: “Queres ficar curado?” ⁷O doente respondeu: “Senhor, não tenho ninguém que me leve à piscina quando a água é agitada. Quando estou chegando, outro entra na minha frente”. ⁸Jesus disse: “Levanta-te, pega a tua cama e anda”. ⁹No mesmo instante, o homem ficou curado, pegou a sua cama e começou a andar. Ora, esse dia era um sábado. ¹⁰Por isso, os judeus disseram ao homem que tinha sido curado: “É sábado! Não te é permitido carregar tua cama”. ¹¹Ele respondeu-lhes: “Aquele que me curou disse: ‘Pega tua cama e anda’”. ¹²Então lhe perguntaram: “Quem é que te disse: ‘Pega tua cama e anda’?” ¹³O homem que tinha sido curado não sabia quem fora, pois Jesus se tinha afastado da multidão que se encontrava naquele lugar. ¹⁴Mais tarde, Jesus encontrou o homem no templo e lhe disse: “Eis que estás curado. Não voltes a pecar, para que não te aconteça coisa pior”. ¹⁵Então o homem saiu e contou aos judeus que tinha sido Jesus quem o havia curado. ¹⁶Por isso, os judeus começaram a perseguir Jesus, porque fazia tais coisas em dia de sábado. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel - John 5,1-16

Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to John - There was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went to Jerusalem. 2 There is in Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, a pool with five porches, called Bethesda in Hebrew. 3 Many sick people were lying there: blind, lame, and paralyzed. 4Then an angel came down from time to time and moved the pool water, and the first sick man who came in after the bubbling of the water was cured of any disease he had. 5There was a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years. 6Jesus saw the man lying down and, knowing he had been sick for so long, said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" 7The sick man replied, "Lord, I have no one to take me to the pool when the water is shaken. When I am coming, another comes in front of me. " 8Jesus said, "Arise, take up your bed and walk." 9At the very moment the man was healed, took his bed, and began to walk. Now that day was a Sabbath. 10Therefore the Jews said unto the man that he was healed, It is the sabbath! You are not allowed to carry your bed. " 11 He answered them, "He that healed me said, Take up thy bed, and walk." 12And they said to him, "Who said to you, 'Take up thy bed, and walk?'" 13The man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn from the crowd that was in that place. 14 Later Jesus met the man in the temple and said to him, "Behold, you are healed. Do not sin again, lest a worse thing happen to you. " 15Then the man went out and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16Therefore the Jews began to persecute Jesus, because he did such things on the sabbath day. - Word of salvation.

Refletindo o Evangelho

Jesus, fonte de água viva, cura um homem que sempre esteve doente. “Você quer ficar bom?”. A pergunta de Jesus parece despertar alguém que vive conformado com sua situação: você quer mesmo recuperar a saúde? Só é possível ajudar a quem permite ser ajudado. A ordem de Jesus revela compaixão e eficácia (v. 8). O homem saiu andando. Até aqui, sem problemas. A encrenca começa porque a cura se dá em dia de sábado. Ora, o descanso sabático é, para os judeus, um dos preceitos mais sagrados. Querem barrar o homem que caminha livremente carregando sua maca. Não conseguem acolher a bondade do Senhor que devolve a saúde, a vida nova e a felicidade a uma pessoa que viveu todo o tempo prisioneira da doença. Permanecem cegos e, nessa condição, começam a “perseguir Jesus”.

Reflecting the Gospel

Jesus, source of living water, heals a man who has always been sick. "Do you want to get well?" The question of Jesus seems to awaken someone who lives conformed to his situation: do you really want to recover health? It is only possible to help those who allow themselves to be helped. Jesus' command reveals compassion and effectiveness (verse 8). The man walked away. So far, no problem. The trouble begins because the cure is on Saturday. Now the Sabbath rest is, for the Jews, one of the most sacred precepts. They want to bar the man who walks freely carrying his stretcher. They fail to welcome the goodness of the Lord who brings health, new life, and happiness back to a person who has been a prisoner of illness all the time. They remain blind and, in this condition, begin to "persecute Jesus".

Jesus você foi “a mão” que ninguém pôde ser para aquele homem. Que eu seja “a tua mão” para levar tantos ao caminho da graça, de uma vida melhor. Na vida futura, na vida eterna que me aguarda, sei que não irás acolher-me pelos bens que possuo mas sim, pela caridade que praticar em minha vida. Que nosso Deus continue nos abençoando sempre.
