Evangelho - João 3,14-21

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus a Nicodemos: ¹⁴“Do mesmo modo como Moisés levantou a serpente no deserto, assim é necessário que o Filho do homem seja levantado, ¹⁵para que todos os que nele crerem tenham a vida eterna. ¹⁶Pois Deus amou tanto o mundo, que deu o seu Filho unigênito, para que não morra todo o que nele crer, mas tenha a vida eterna. ¹⁷De fato, Deus não enviou o seu Filho ao mundo para condenar o mundo, mas para que o mundo seja salvo por ele. ¹⁸Quem nele crê não é condenado, mas quem não crê já está condenado, porque não acreditou no nome do Filho unigênito. ¹⁹Ora, o julgamento é este: a luz veio ao mundo, mas os homens preferiram as trevas à luz, porque suas ações eram más. ²⁰Quem pratica o mal odeia a luz e não se aproxima da luz, para que suas ações não sejam denunciadas. ²¹Mas quem age conforme a verdade aproxima-se da luz, para que se manifeste que suas ações são realizadas em Deus”. – Palavra da salvação.

Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ According to John - At that time Jesus said to Nicodemus: 14 "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that all who believe in him may have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not die, but have everlasting life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. 18And he that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed the name of the only begotten Son. 19Or, the judgment is this: light has come into the world, but men have preferred darkness to light, because their deeds were evil. 20 Whoever practices evil hates the light and does not approach the light, lest his actions be denounced. 21But whoever acts according to the truth draws near to the light, so that his actions may be manifested in God. Refletindo o Evangelho

No diálogo com Nicodemos, mestre em Israel, Jesus reivindica a si mesmo duas funções da lei mosaica: ser fonte de vida e norma de conduta para as pessoas. Se a lei de Moisés, representada na serpente de bronze, podia restituir a vida transitoriamente, Jesus a proporciona de forma definitiva. O relato do evangelho faz alusão a um episódio do êxodo, quando o povo hebreu está no deserto em busca da libertação. Faz memória da serpente levantada por Moisés no deserto; Jesus levantado na cruz é sinal de vida e salvação. Se a serpente levantada no deserto salvava as pessoas mordidas por serpentes, Jesus é sinal de salvação para toda a humanidade, pois ele ama não apenas um povo, mas todos os povos, todo o mundo. Assim o Mestre galileu supera a proposta de Nicodemos: a pessoa não chega à plenitude de vida pela observância da lei, mas pela capacidade de amar. Jesus não é um juiz que condena, mas um doador de vida, alguém que doa a própria vida em favor dos outros. Com pessoas capazes de amar é que se consegue construir comunidades fraternas e solidárias.

Reflecting the Gospel

In dialogue with Nicodemus, a teacher in Israel, Jesus claims to himself two functions of the Mosaic law: to be a source of life and a standard of conduct for people. If the law of Moses, represented in the bronze serpent, could restore life temporarily, Jesus provides it definitively. The account of the gospel alludes to an episode of the exodus, when the Hebrew people are in the desert in search of deliverance. He remembers the serpent raised by Moses in the wilderness; Jesus raised on the cross is a sign of life and salvation. If the serpent raised in the wilderness saved people who were bitten by serpents, Jesus is a sign of salvation for all mankind, for he loves not only one people but all peoples, the whole world. Thus the Galilean Master surpasses the proposal of Nicodemus: one does not reach the fullness of life by the observance of the law, but by the capacity to love. Jesus is not a judge who condemns, but a giver of life, one who gives his own life for others. With people capable of loving, one can build fraternal and caring communities.
