Leitura da carta de são Paulo aos Romanos – Irmãos, 18 estou ciente que o bem não habita em mim, isto é, na minha carne. Pois eu tenho capacidade de querer o bem, mas não de realizá-lo. 19 Com efeito, não faço o bem que quero, mas faço o mal que não quero. 20 Ora, se faço aquilo que não quero, então já não sou eu que estou agindo, mas o pecado que habita em mim. 21 Portanto, descubro em mim esta lei: quando quero fazer o bem, é o mal que se me apresenta. 22 Como homem interior, ponho toda a minha satisfação na lei de Deus; 23 mas sinto em meus membros outra lei, que luta contra a lei da minha razão e me aprisiona na lei do pecado, essa lei que está em meus membros. 24 Infeliz que eu sou! Quem me libertará deste corpo de morte? 25 Graças sejam dadas a Deus, por Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor. – Palavra do Senhor.

Como é que não sabeis interpretar o tempo presente? 57 Por que não julgais por vós mesmos o que é justo? 58 Quando, pois, tu vais com o teu adversário apresentar-te diante do magistrado, procura resolver o caso com ele enquanto estais a caminho. Senão ele te levará ao juiz, o juiz te entregará ao guarda e o guarda te jogará na cadeia. 59 Eu te digo, daí tu não sairás, enquanto não pagares o último centavo”. – Palavra da salvação.

Refletindo o Evangelho
Todas as pessoas, sobretudo as autoridades, deveriam reconhecer os sinais da chegada do Reino de Deus por meio das palavras e atos de Jesus. Mais que fazer uma revolução política, econômica e social, Jesus denunciou todos os contravalores criados pela ideologia do poder, da riqueza e do prestígio, colocando em seu lugar os valores da fraternidade e da partilha, que geram liberdade e vida para todos. Somente o projeto de Jesus pode libertar o povo da escravidão e da morte. No final, Jesus adverte: É importante valorizar o momento presente. É tempo de possível reconciliação com Deus e com o próximo. Quando chegar a hora do julgamento, será tarde demais. Os contemporâneos de Jesus não discerniram os sinais da presença de Jesus e do seu Reino.
