Leitura da carta de são Paulo aos Romanos – Irmãos, 1 que vantagem diremos ter obtido Abraão, nosso pai segundo a carne? 2 Pois se Abraão se tornou justo em virtude das obras, está aí seu motivo de glória… mas não perante Deus! 3 Com efeito, o que diz a Escritura? “Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi creditado como justiça”. 4 Ora, para quem faz um trabalho, o salário não é creditado como um presente gratuito, mas como uma dívida. 5 Porém, para a pessoa que, em vez de fazer um trabalho, crê naquele que torna justo o ímpio, a sua fé lhe é creditada como atestado de justiça. 6 É assim que Davi declara feliz o homem a quem Deus credita a justiça independentemente das obras: 7 “Felizes aqueles cujas transgressões foram remidas e cujos pecados foram perdoados; 8 feliz o homem do qual Deus não leva em conta o pecado”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Jesus começou a falar, primeiro a seus discípulos: “Tomai cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus, que é a hipocrisia. 2 Não há nada de escondido que não venha a ser revelado, e não há nada de oculto que não venha a ser conhecido. 3 Portanto, tudo o que tiverdes dito na escuridão será ouvido à luz do dia; e o que tiverdes pronunciado ao pé do ouvido, no quarto, será proclamado sobre os telhados. 4 Pois bem, meus amigos, eu vos digo, não tenhais medo daqueles que matam o corpo, não podendo fazer mais do que isso. 5 Vou mostrar-vos a quem deveis temer: temei aquele que, depois de tirar a vida, tem o poder de lançar-vos no inferno. Sim, eu vos digo, a esse temei. 6 Não se vendem cinco pardais por uma pequena quantia? No entanto, nenhum deles é esquecido por Deus. 7 Até mesmo os cabelos de vossa cabeça estão todos contados. Refletindo o Evangelho
Jesus denuncia os fariseus porque fazem da observância da Lei o trampolim para obter privilégios. Eles se consideram os puros, os santos. Em vez de servirem ao povo, servem-se do povo, para conservar sua posição social. Este é o “fermento” dos fariseus; esta é a influência maléfica que pode infiltrar-se também no seio da comunidade cristã. Os discípulos devem partilhar o que aprenderam do Mestre. Mas, cuidado: qualquer hipocrisia, na fala e no testemunho, se revelará um dia. Máscaras serão arrancadas. Os discípulos, aqui chamados de “amigos”, são exortados a não temer (no tempo da perseguição), mas ter a coragem de confessar publicamente Jesus. O Pai cuida de todos e está presente em todas as circunstâncias. Se Deus cuida de pássaros indefesos, terá muito mais zelo pelos que seguem o seu Filho.
