Eu venci o mundo.
I won the world.
Com entusiasmo, os discípulos declaram a Jesus: “Nós acreditamos que tu saíste de junto de Deus”. Mas Jesus, conhecedor do coração humano, apaga logo esse fogo de palha, por saber que a fé dos discípulos é fraca, insuficiente para permanecerem fiéis ao Mestre na hora de sua paixão e morte. Com efeito, a partir do momento em que Jesus for preso, haverá dispersão para todo lado. Pressionados, uns fogem, outro nega e alguns se mantêm a distância (cf. Lc 23,49). Os discípulos deixarão o Mestre sozinho, mas ele garante que não está só: com ele está o Pai, que nunca o abandona. A última frase é um grito antecipado de vitória: “Eu venci o mundo”. Com seu sacrifício, Jesus vence o mundo injusto e as forças do mal. Seus discípulos são chamados a participar da luta com a certeza da vitória.

Enthusiastically, the disciples declared to Jesus, "We believe that you have come out of God." But Jesus, knower of the human heart, extinguishes this fire of straw, knowing that the faith of the disciples is weak, insufficient to remain faithful to the master at the time of his passion and death. Indeed, from the moment Jesus is imprisoned, there will be dispersion everywhere. Pressed, some flee, another denies, and some keep their distance (cf. LK 23.49). The disciples will leave the master alone, but he assures that he is not alone: with him is the father, who never abandons him. The last sentence is an early cry of victory: "I have conquered the world." With his sacrifice, Jesus defeats the unjust world and the forces of evil. His disciples are called to participate in the fight with the certainty of victory.

Leitura dos Atos dos Apóstolos 19,1-8 – 1Enquanto Apolo estava em Corinto, Paulo atravessou as regiões montanhosas e chegou a Éfeso. Aí encontrou alguns discípulos e perguntou-lhes: 2“Vós recebestes o Espírito Santo quando abraçastes a fé?” Eles responderam: “Nem sequer ouvimos dizer que existe o Espírito Santo!” 3Então Paulo perguntou: “Que batismo vós recebestes?” Eles responderam: “O batismo de João”. 4Paulo disse-lhes: “João administrava um batismo de conversão, dizendo ao povo que acreditasse naquele que viria depois dele, isto é, em Jesus”. 5Tendo ouvido isso, eles foram batizados no nome do Senhor Jesus. 6Paulo impôs-lhes as mãos, e sobre eles desceu o Espírito Santo. Reading of the Acts of the Apostles 19,1-8 – 1 While Apollo was in Corinth, Paul crossed the mountainous regions and came to Ephesus. Then he found some disciples and asked them: 2 "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you embraced the faith?" They replied, "We have not even heard that there is the Holy Spirit!" 3Then Paul asked, "What baptism Have you received?" They replied, "The baptism of John." 4Paul said unto them, "John was administering a baptism of conversion, telling the people to believe in him who would come after him, that is, in Jesus." 5Having heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6Paul imposed their hands on them, and upon them descended the Holy Spirit. Por isso cremos que vieste da parte de Deus”. 31Jesus respondeu: “Credes agora? 32Eis que vem a hora – e já chegou – em que vos dispersareis, cada um para seu lado, e me deixareis só. Mas eu não estou só, porque o Pai está comigo. 33Disse-vos estas coisas para que tenhais paz em mim. No mundo, tereis tribulações. Mas tende coragem! Eu venci o mundo!” – Palavra da salvação.
