Aqueles que têm saúde não precisam de médico, mas sim os doentes. 

Those who have health do not need a doctor, but the sick.

O cobrador de impostos chamado Matheus, estava a serviço dos ocupantes romanos, razão pela qual era malvisto e desprezado pelos doutores da Lei e pelos fariseus. No entanto, foi a ele que, enquanto exercia sua profissão, Jesus chamou: “Siga-me”. A adesão foi imediata. A Mateus é atribuída a redação de um dos quatro Evangelhos; antes em aramaico. O Evangelho de Mateus, tal qual o possuímos hoje, escrito em grego, sofreu influência de Marcos e de Lucas. Conservou, porém, sua fisionomia própria.
