The Son of man came to seek and save what was lost.

A afirmação de Jesus: “O Filho do Homem veio procurar e salvar o que estava perdido”, não foi compreendida por aqueles os que o criticavam por hospedar-se na casa do rico Zaqueu. Sem conhecer Jesus, Zaqueu se coloca na dinâmica de quem quer vê-lo. Jesus, senhor de excelente presença de espírito, entabula rápida conversa com Zaqueu, em cuja casa se propõe ficar. É o tempo do diálogo descontraído e sincero, do arrependimento de Zaqueu pelos roubos cometidos. É a ocasião para assumir, com gestos concretos, livre e alegre, à conversão, à justiça e à fraternidade.

Jesus' statement: "The Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost," was not understood by those who criticized him for staying in the home of rich Zacchaus. Without knowing Jesus, Zacchaus puts himself in the dynamics of those who want to see him. Jesus, lord of excellent presence of mind, engages quickly with Zaqueu, whose house is intended to stay. It is the time of relaxed and sincere dialogue, of Zacchaeus' repentance for the thefts committed. It is the opportunity to assume, with concrete gestures, free and joyful, conversion, justice and fraternity.

Leitura do segundo livro dos Macabeus 6,18-31 – 18Eleazar era um dos principais doutores da lei, homem de idade avançada e de venerável aparência. Quiseram obrigá-lo a comer carne de porco, abrindo à força sua boca. 19Mas ele, preferindo morrer gloriosamente a viver desonrado, caminhou espontaneamente para a tortura da roda, 20depois de ter cuspido o que lhe haviam posto na boca. Assim deveriam proceder os que têm a coragem de recusar aquilo que nem para salvar a vida é lícito comer. 21Os encarregados desse ímpio banquete ritual, que conheciam Eleazar desde muito tempo, chamaram-no à parte e insistiram para que mandasse trazer carnes cujo uso lhes era permitido e que ele mesmo tivesse preparado, apenas fingisse comer carnes provenientes do sacrifício, conforme o rei ordenara. 22Agindo assim, evitaria a morte, aproveitando esta oportunidade que lhe davam em consideração à velha amizade. 23Mas ele tomou uma nobre resolução, digna da sua idade, digna do prestígio de sua velhice, dos seus cabelos embranquecidos com honra e da vida sem mancha que levara desde a infância. Uma resolução digna, sobretudo, da santa legislação instituída pelo próprio Deus. E respondeu coerentemente, dizendo que o mandassem logo para a mansão dos mortos. 24E acrescentou: “Usar desse fingimento seria indigno da nossa idade. Muitos jovens ficariam convencidos de que Eleazar, aos noventa anos, adotou as normas de vida dos estrangeiros; 25seriam enganados por mim, por causa do fingimento que eu usaria para salvar um breve resto de vida. De minha parte, eu atrairia sobre minha velhice a vergonha e a desonra. 26E ainda que escapasse por um momento ao castigo dos homens, eu não poderia, nem vivo nem morto, fugir das mãos do Todo-Poderoso. 27Se, pelo contrário, eu agora renunciar corajosamente a esta vida, vou mostrar-me digno de minha velhice 28e deixarei aos jovens o nobre exemplo de como se deve morrer, com entusiasmo e generosidade, pelas veneráveis e santas leis”. Ditas essas palavras, caminhou logo para o suplício. 29Os que o conduziam transformaram em brutalidade a benevolência manifestada pouco antes. E consideraram loucas as palavras que ele acabara de dizer. 30Eleazar, porém, estando para morrer sob os golpes, disse ainda entre gemidos: “O Senhor, em sua santa sabedoria, vê muito bem que eu, podendo escapar da morte, suporto em meu corpo as dores cruéis provocadas pelos açoites, mas em minha alma suporto-as com alegria, por causa do temor que lhe tenho”. 31Assim Eleazar partiu desta vida. Com sua morte, deixou um exemplo de coragem e um modelo inesquecível de virtude, não só para os jovens, mas também para toda a nação. – Palavra do Senhor.

1st. Reading 

Reading of the second book of the Maccabees 6,18-31 – 18Eleazar was one of the leading doctors of the law, old-age man and venerable appearance. They wanted to make him eat pork, forcibly opening his mouth. 19 But he, preferring to die gloriously to live dishonoredly, spontaneously walked into the torture of the wheel, 20 after he had spat on what they had put in his mouth. So they should proceed those who have the courage to refuse what they can't even to save life is lawful to eat. 21Those in charge of this wicked ritual feast, who knew Eleazar for a long time, called him aside and insisted that he have meat stemming from them and that he himself had prepared, only pretend to eat meat stemming from the sacrifice, as the king had commanded. 22 Acting thus, he would avoid death, taking advantage of this opportunity which gave him into account to the old friendship. 23 But he took a noble resolution, worthy of his age, worthy of the prestige of his old age, of his hair covered with honor and the unstained life he had taken since childhood. A resolution worthy, above all, of the holy legislation instituted by God himself. And he responded coherently, saying that they sent him soon to the mansion of the dead. 24 And he added: "Using this pretense would be unworthy of our age. Many young people would be convinced that Eleazar, at the age of ninety, adopted the norms of life of foreigners; 25 would be deceived by me because of the pretense I would use to save a brief rest of life. For my part, I would attract shame and dishonor about my old age. 26And even if I escaped for a moment the punishment of men, I could neither live nor dead, flee from the hands of the Almighty. 27 If, on the contrary, I now courageously renounce this life, I will show myself worthy of my old age 28 and leave to young people the noble example of how one should die, with enthusiasm and generosity, by the venerable and holy laws." Spoken of these words, he walked soon to the torment. 29The who led him turned into brutality the benevolence manifested shortly before. And they considered crazy the words he had just said. 30Eleazar, however, standing to die under the blows, he also said among groans: "The Lord, in his holy wisdom, sees very well that I, being able to escape death, bear in my body the cruel pains caused by the scourges, but in my soul I bear them with joy, because of the fear I have to him." 31 So Eleazar came from this life. With his death, he left an example of courage and an unforgettable model of virtue, not only for young people, but also for the whole nation. " Word of the Lord.

– Quão numerosos, ó Senhor, os que me atacam; / quanta gente se levanta contra mim! / Muitos dizem, comentando a meu respeito: / “Ele não acha a salvação junto de Deus!”

Por amor, Deus enviou-nos o seu Filho / como vítima por nossas transgressões (1Jo 4,10). – Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas 19,1-10 – Naquele tempo, 1Jesus tinha entrado em Jericó e estava atravessando a cidade. 2Havia ali um homem chamado Zaqueu, que era chefe dos cobradores de impostos e muito rico. 3Zaqueu procurava ver quem era Jesus, mas não conseguia por causa da multidão, pois era muito baixo. 4Então ele correu à frente e subiu numa figueira para ver Jesus, que devia passar por ali. 5Quando Jesus chegou ao lugar, olhou para cima e disse: “Zaqueu, desce depressa! Hoje eu devo ficar na tua casa”. 6Ele desceu depressa e recebeu Jesus com alegria. 7Ao ver isso, todos começaram a murmurar, dizendo: “Ele foi hospedar-se na casa de um pecador!” 8Zaqueu ficou de pé e disse ao Senhor: “Senhor, eu dou a metade dos meus bens aos pobres e, se defraudei alguém, vou devolver quatro vezes mais”. 9Jesus lhe disse: “Hoje a salvação entrou nesta casa, porque também este homem é um filho de Abraão. 10Com efeito, o Filho do homem veio procurar e salvar o que estava perdido”. – Palavra da salvação.
