Here is who is bigger than Jonas.

Reflection
In the face of Jesus' teachings, his countrymen, especially the ruling class, are hard-hearted and unbelieving. To unmask this reality, Jesus uses the figure of Jonah, who had achieved the conversion of people not belonging to Judaism. By the preaching of Jonah, that pagan people began to worship and follow the one true God. Behold, Jesus performs in the midst of the people the signs of the same God of Jonah, the works which the Father has entrusted to him. But this generation remains insensible to the preaching of Jesus and aggressive to his person. Closed to the understanding of the divine work, the enemies of Jesus are condemned. They will be judged by the people of Nineveh, their greatest enemy. The great sign of Jesus is his resurrection. He is constantly passing through our lives, inviting us to conversion.

1a. Leitura
– Palavra do Senhor.

1st. Reading
Read Jonah's prophecy from 3,1-10 - 1A word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 "Get up and stand on the way of the great city of Nineveh and announces you the message I'll trust ". 3Jonas set out for Nineveh, according to the commandment of the LORD. Now Nineveh was a very great city; it took three days to cross. Jonah went into the city, walking the path of one day; preached to the people, saying, "Still forty days, and Nineveh shall be destroyed." 5The Ninevites believed in God; they accepted fasting and wore sacks from the top to the bottom. 6The preaching came to the ears of the king of Nineveh; he arose from the throne and set aside the royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat upon ashes. 7And he made a proclamation in Nineveh as a decree of the king and of the princes, "Men and cattle and sheep shall taste nothing! They will not eat and drink no water. 8 Men and animals shall cover themselves with sackcloth, and men shall pray to God with strength; each one must turn away from the evil path and his perverse practices. 9 God may turn back, to forgive us and appease his wrath, and so we will not perish. " 10 And when God saw their works of conversion, and that the Ninevites were turned away from the evil way, he had compassion and put off the evil which he had threatened to do unto them, and he did not do it. - Word of the Lord.

Evangelho

Gospel
Jesus Christ, you are blessed, / you are the anointed of God the Father!
Return to the Lord your God, / he is good, compassionate and merciful (Jl 2,12).
Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke 11: 29-32 - At that time, when the crowds gathered in great numbers, Jesus began to say: "This generation is an evil generation. She seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to her, except the sign of Jonah. 30 For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of man be to this generation. 31 On the day of judgment, the queen of the South will rise with the men of this generation and condemn them. For she came from a land far away to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And here is who is greater than Solomon. 32 On the day of judgment the Ninevites shall rise up together with this generation, and shall condemn it. Because they were converted when they heard the preaching of Jonah. And here is who is greater than Jonah. " - Word of salvation.

Salmo 50/51
Ó Senhor, não desprezeis um coração arrependido!
Tende piedade, ó meu Deus, misericórdia! / Na imensidão de vosso amor, purificai-me! / Lavai-me todo inteiro do pecado / e apagai completamente a minha culpa!

Psalm 50/51
O Lord, do not despise a repentant heart!
Have mercy on me, O my God! / In the immensity of your love, purify me! / Wash away all of sin / and completely blot out my guilt!
Create in me a heart that is pure, / give me a decided spirit again. O Lord, do not turn me away from your face, nor withdraw your Holy Spirit from me!
For the sacrifices are not pleasing to you, and if you offer a burnt offering, you reject it. / My sacrifice is my penitent soul, / do not despise a repentant heart!
