O rosário teve sua origem no século XII por iniciativa dos dominicanos. Em 1573, o Papa Gregório XIII, para realçar a importância do rosário, permitiu que a ordem dominicana, as confrarias do Santo Rosário e as igrejas com um altar em honra da Virgem do Rosário celebrassem, no primeiro domingo de outubro, a festa do “Santo Rosário da Bem- aventurada Virgem Maria”. São Pio X fixou a festa para o dia 7 de outubro. O atual Calendário Romano manteve a data, porém retocou o título da festa para: “Bem-aventurada Virgem Maria do Rosário”, abreviado na edição brasileira do Missal para “Nossa Senhora do Rosário”.

The rosary originated in the 12TH century on the initiative of the Dominicans.
