Evangelho - Mateus 14,1-12

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – ¹Naquele tempo, a fama de Jesus chegou aos ouvidos do governador Herodes. ²Ele disse a seus servidores: “É João Batista, que ressuscitou dos mortos; e, por isso, os poderes miraculosos atuam nele”. ³De fato, Herodes tinha mandado prender João, amarrá-lo e colocá-lo na prisão por causa de Herodíades, a mulher de seu irmão Filipe. ⁴Pois João tinha dito a Herodes: “Não te é permitido tê-la como esposa”. ⁵Herodes queria matar João, mas tinha medo do povo, que o considerava como profeta. ⁶Por ocasião do aniversário de Herodes, a filha de Herodíades dançou diante de todos e agradou tanto a Herodes, ⁷que ele prometeu, com juramento, dar a ela tudo o que pedisse. ⁸Instigada pela mãe, ela disse: “Dá-me aqui, num prato, a cabeça de João Batista”. ⁹O rei ficou triste, mas, por causa do juramento diante dos convidados, ordenou que atendessem o pedido dela. ¹⁰E mandou cortar a cabeça de João no cárcere. ¹¹Depois a cabeça foi trazida num prato, entregue à moça e esta a levou para a sua mãe. ¹²Os discípulos de João foram buscar o corpo e o enterraram. Depois foram contar tudo a Jesus. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel - Matthew 14,1-12

PrProclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ According to Matthew - 1 At that time, the fame of Jesus reached the ears of Governor Herod. 2 He said to his servants, "It is John the Baptist, who is risen from the dead; and therefore the miraculous powers work in him. " In fact, Herod had John arrested, tied him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. 4 For John had said to Herod, "You are not allowed to have her for a wife." 5Herodes wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, who considered him a prophet. 6On the occasion of Herod's birthday, Herodias' daughter danced before them all and so pleased Herod, that he promised with an oath to give her everything he asked for. 8Sayed by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter." 9The king was grieved, but because of the oath before the guests, he commanded them to heed her request. 10And he had John's head cut off in the prison. 11 Then the head was brought on a platter, delivered to the girl, and she carried it to her mother. 12 The disciples of John went to fetch the body and buried it. Then they went to tell Jesus everything. - Word of salvation.

Refletindo o Evangelho

João Batista e Jesus cumpriram com valentia a missão de profetas. Nem João nem Jesus fizeram pacto com o erro, a mentira, a exploração. Foram fiéis executores do plano de Deus: justiça, amor e vida abundante para todos. Herodes, ao invés, foi promotor do antirreino: mergulhado na maldade, seguia ceifando vidas, oprimindo o povo, cavando sua própria condenação. Os convidados para o banquete aceitaram passivamente que João fosse degolado no cárcere: covardes e malignos como o próprio Herodes! Tendo por modelo o Batista, possamos desmascarar a ousadia dos que se creem ter poder absoluto sobre pessoas e povos. Alguém tem que dar um basta a essa fúria incontrolável. Ainda que pague com a própria vida.

Reflecting the Gospel

John the Baptist and Jesus fulfilled the mission of prophets with courage. Neither John nor Jesus made a covenant with error, deception, exploitation. They were faithful executors of God's plan: justice, love, and abundant life for all. Herod, on the other hand, was a promoter of the anti-reign: immersed in the evil, continued reaping lives, oppressing the people, digging their own condemnation. The guests to the feast accepted passively that John be slain in prison: cowards and evil like Herod himself! With the Baptist as the model, we can expose the daring of those who believe they have absolute power over people and peoples. Someone has to stop this uncontrollable fury. Even if you pay with your own life.
