I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize with the Holy Spirit!

1a. Leitura - Isaías 42,1-4.6-7

Leitura do livro do profeta Isaías – Assim fala o Senhor: ¹“Eis o meu servo – eu o recebo; eis o meu eleito – nele se compraz minha alma; pus meu espírito sobre ele, ele promoverá o julgamento das nações. ²Ele não clama nem levanta a voz, nem se faz ouvir pelas ruas. ³Não quebra uma cana rachada nem apaga um pavio que ainda fumega, mas promoverá o julgamento para obter a verdade. ⁴Não esmorecerá nem se deixará abater, enquanto não estabelecer a justiça na terra; os países distantes esperam seus ensinamentos. ⁶Eu, o Senhor, te chamei para a justiça e te tomei pela mão; eu te formei e te constituí como o centro de aliança do povo, luz das nações, ⁷para abrires os olhos dos cegos, tirar os cativos da prisão, livrar do cárcere os que vivem nas trevas”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Marcos – Naquele tempo, ⁷João Batista pregava, dizendo: “Depois de mim virá alguém mais forte do que eu. Eu nem sou digno de me abaixar para desamarrar suas sandálias. ⁸Eu vos batizei com água, mas ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo”. ⁹Naqueles dias, Jesus veio de Nazaré da Galileia e foi batizado por João no rio Jordão. ¹⁰E logo, ao sair da água, viu o céu se abrindo e o Espírito, como pomba, descer sobre ele. ¹¹E do céu veio uma voz: “Tu és o meu Filho amado, em ti ponho meu bem-querer”. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel - Marcos 1,7-11

Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to Mark - At that time, John the Baptist preached, saying, "After me shall come a stronger than I. I'm not even worthy to lower myself to untie his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. " 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10And as soon as he came out of the water, he saw the heaven opening, and the Spirit as a dove descending upon him. 11And out of heaven came a voice, "Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I make my well-will." - Word of salvation.

Refletindo o Evangelho

João pregava e batizava. Por sua pregação, as pessoas eram convidadas a se manter fiéis ao projeto de Deus e acolher o Messias. Por seu batismo, deviam mudar de vida: batismo de conversão. “Mais forte” do que João, o Messias haveria de batizar com o Espírito Santo. Portanto, não batismo com água de rio, mas com o “vento” que desce do céu e renova a vida. Eis que Jesus vem de Nazaré da Galileia e se apresenta para receber o batismo de João. Nessa  circunstância, Jesus testemunha a presença do Espírito Santo, que desce sobre ele em forma de pomba (cf. Gn 1,2: primeira criação) e a manifestação do Pai, cuja voz ecoa solenemente: “Tu  és o meu Filho amado. Em ti eu me agrado”. Este é o Messias servidor que, mediante o serviço, implantará entre nós o Reino de Deus.

Reflecting the Gospel

John preached and baptized. Through his preaching, people were invited to remain faithful to the plan of God and welcome the Messiah. By their baptism they were to change their lives: baptism of conversion. "Stronger" than John, the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit. Therefore, not baptism with river water, but with the "wind" that descends from heaven and renews life. Here Jesus comes from Nazareth of Galilee and presents himself to receive the baptism of John. In this circumstance, Jesus witnesses the presence of the Holy Spirit, who descends upon him in the form of a dove (cf. manifestation of the Father, whose voice echoes solemnly: "You are my beloved Son. In you I am pleased. " This is the Messiah who, through service, will implant among us the Kingdom of God.
