1st Reading - 1João 2,22-28
Leitura da primeira carta de São João – Caríssimos, 22 quem é mentiroso, senão aquele que nega que Jesus é o Cristo? O anticristo é aquele que nega o Pai e o Filho. 23 Todo aquele que nega o Filho também não possui o Pai. Quem confessa o Filho possui também o Pai. 24 Permaneça dentro de vós aquilo que ouvistes desde o princípio. Se o que ouvistes desde o princípio permanecer em vós, permanecereis com o Filho e com o Pai. 25 E esta é a promessa que ele nos fez: a vida eterna. 26 Escrevo isso a respeito dos que procuram desencaminhar-vos. 27 Quanto a vós mesmos, a unção que recebestes da parte de Jesus permanece convosco, e não tendes necessidade de que alguém vos ensine. A sua unção vos ensina tudo, e ela é verdadeira e não mentirosa. Por isso, conforme a unção de Jesus vos ensinou, permanecei nele. 28 Então, agora, filhinhos, permanecei nele. Assim poderemos ter plena confiança quando ele se manifestar e não seremos vergonhosamente afastados dele quando da sua vinda. – Palavra do Senhor.

Eu não mereço desamarrar a correia de suas sandálias”. 28Isso aconteceu em Betânia além do Jordão, onde João estava batizando. – Palavra da salvação.
Gospel - John 1,19-28
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John - This was the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask, "Who are you?" 20 John confessed and did not deny. Refletindo o Evangelho
No evangelho de João, sacerdotes e levitas são membros do partido farisaico e também contrários a Jesus. Partem de Jerusalém para investigar quem é aquele pregador que está se tornando popular. As autoridades sempre temem os líderes capazes de arrastar multidões e de se tornar ameaça para quem está bem instalado no poder. João não precisa de títulos; não anda em busca de fama e tampouco usa mentiras para enganar o povo. Responde simplesmente que não é o Messias esperado como descendente legítimo de Davi; não é Elias, o profeta que pregou a fidelidade à lei de Moisés; não é o profeta (os judeus esperavam um novo Moisés, o profeta do Êxodo). João Batista testemunha que está chegando uma pessoa que o supera em direitos. Refere-se ao Messias.

In the gospel of John, priests and Levites are members of the Pharisaic party and also opposed to Jesus. They leave Jerusalem to investigate who is that preacher who is becoming popular. Authorities are always afraid of leaders capable of dragging crowds and of becoming a threat to anyone who is well-placed in power. John does not need titles; does not seek fame and does not use lies to deceive the people. He simply responds that he is not the expected Messiah as David's legitimate descendant; it is not Elijah, the prophet who preached faithfulness to the law of Moses; is not the prophet (the Jews expected a new Moses, the prophet of the Exodus). John the Baptist testifies that a person is coming who surpasses him in rights. It refers to the Messiah.
