Leitura do livro do Eclesiástico 5,1-10 – 1Não confies nas tuas riquezas e não digas: “Basta-me viver!” 2Não deixes que tua força te leve a seguir as paixões do coração. 3Não digas: “Quem terá poder sobre mim?” ou: “Quem me fará prestar contas das minhas ações?”, pois o Senhor, com certeza, te castigará. 4Não digas: “Pequei, e que de mau me aconteceu?”, pois o Altíssimo é paciente. 5Não percas o temor por causa do perdão, cometendo pecado sobre pecado. 6Não digas: “A misericórdia do Senhor é grande, ele me perdoará a multidão dos meus pecados!”, 7pois dele procedem misericórdia e cólera, e sua ira se abate sobre os pecadores. 8Não demores em voltar para o Senhor e não adies de um dia para outro, 9pois a sua cólera vem de repente e, no dia do castigo, serás aniquilado. 10Não te apoies em riquezas injustas, pois elas de nada te valerão no dia da desgraça. – Palavra do Senhor.

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Marcos 9,41-50 – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: 41“Quem vos der a beber um copo de água, porque sois de Cristo, não ficará sem receber a sua recompensa. 42E se alguém escandalizar um destes pequeninos que creem, melhor seria que fosse jogado no mar com uma pedra de moinho amarrada ao pescoço. 43Se tua mão te leva a pecar, corta-a! É melhor entrar na vida sem uma das mãos do que, tendo as duas, ir para o inferno, para o fogo que nunca se apaga.[44] 45Se teu pé te leva a pecar, corta-o! É melhor entrar na vida sem um dos pés do que, tendo os dois, ser jogado no inferno.[46] 47Se teu olho te leva a pecar, arranca-o! O escândalo existe quando na comunidade há quem, ao invés de servir, quer ser maior que os outros, colocando-se como superior. Essa ambição pode pôr em perigo a adesão dos “pequeninos” a Jesus. Os servidores do Reino, ao verem os veteranos seguidores de Jesus brigando por causa de poder, acabam desanimando e desistindo do serviço gratuito e generoso. As obras (a mão que pega o proibido), o comportamento (o pé que anda no mau caminho) e a ambição (o olho que olha cobiçando) buscam prestígio e superioridade: devem ser extirpados, pois são prejudiciais aos que querem ser fiéis a Jesus. O mal deve ser arrancado pela raiz. O sal, que impede a corrupção dos alimentos, é figura da fidelidade a Cristo. A fidelidade de todos à mensagem do Evangelho conservará a paz na comunidade.

The scandal exists when in the community there are those who, instead of serving, want to be greater than the others, placing themselves as superior. This ambition can endanger the adherence of the "little ones" to Jesus. Servants of the Kingdom, seeing the veteran followers of Jesus fighting over power, end up discouraging and giving up the free and generous service. The works (the hand that takes the forbidden), the behavior (the foot that walks in the bad way) and the ambition (the eye that looks covetous) seek prestige and superiority: they must be extirpated, because they are harmful to those who want to be faithful to Jesus. Evil must be plucked from the roots. Salt, which prevents the corruption of food, is a picture of fidelity to Christ. The fidelity of all to the Gospel message will preserve peace in the community.
