Leitura da carta aos Hebreus 13,1-8 – Irmãos, 1perseverai no amor fraterno. 2Não esqueçais a hospitalidade, pois, graças a ela, alguns hospedaram anjos sem o perceber. 3Lembrai-vos dos prisioneiros, como se estivésseis presos com eles, e dos que são maltratados, pois também vós tendes um corpo! 4O matrimônio seja honrado por todos e o leito conjugal, sem mancha, porque Deus julgará os imorais e adúlteros. 5Que o amor ao dinheiro não inspire a vossa conduta. Contentai-vos com o que tendes, porque ele próprio disse: “Eu nunca te deixarei, jamais te abandonarei”. 6De modo que podemos dizer com ousadia: “O Senhor é meu auxílio, jamais temerei; que poderá fazer-me o homem?” 7Lembrai-vos de vossos dirigentes, que vos pregaram a palavra de Deus, e, considerando o fim de sua vida, imitai-lhes a fé. 8Jesus Cristo é o mesmo, ontem e hoje e por toda a eternidade. – Palavra do Senhor.

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Marcos 6,14-29 – Naquele tempo, 14o rei Herodes ouviu falar de Jesus, cujo nome se tinha tornado muito conhecido. Alguns diziam: “João Batista ressuscitou dos mortos. Por isso os poderes agem nesse homem”. 15Outros diziam: “É Elias”. Outros ainda diziam: “É um profeta como um dos profetas”. 16Ouvindo isso, Herodes disse: “Ele é João Batista. Eu mandei cortar a cabeça dele, mas ele ressuscitou!” 17Herodes tinha mandado prender João e colocá-lo acorrentado na prisão. Fez isso por causa de Herodíades, mulher do seu irmão Filipe, com quem se tinha casado. 18João dizia a Herodes: “Não te é permitido ficar com a mulher do teu irmão”. 19Por isso Herodíades o odiava e queria matá-lo, mas não podia. 20Com efeito, Herodes tinha medo de João, pois sabia que ele era justo e santo, e por isso o protegia. Gostava de ouvi-lo, embora ficasse embaraçado quando o escutava. 21Finalmente, chegou o dia oportuno. Era o aniversário de Herodes, e ele fez um grande banquete para os grandes da corte, os oficiais e os cidadãos importantes da Galileia. 22A filha de Herodíades entrou e dançou, agradando a Herodes e seus convidados. Então o rei disse à moça: “Pede-me o que quiseres e eu to darei”. 23E lhe jurou, dizendo: “Eu te darei qualquer coisa que me pedires, ainda que seja a metade do meu reino”. 24Ela saiu e perguntou à mãe: “O que vou pedir?” A mãe respondeu: “A cabeça de João Batista”. 25E, voltando depressa para junto do rei, pediu: “Quero que me dês agora, num prato, a cabeça de João Batista”. 26O rei ficou muito triste, mas não pôde recusar. Ele tinha feito o juramento diante dos convidados. 27Imediatamente, o rei mandou que um soldado fosse buscar a cabeça de João. O soldado saiu, degolou-o na prisão, 28trouxe a cabeça num prato e a deu à moça. Ela a entregou à sua mãe. 29Ao saberem disso, os discípulos de João foram lá, levaram o cadáver e o sepultaram. – Palavra da salvação.

Then the king said to the girl, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you." 23And he swore to him, saying, "I will give you whatever you ask of me, even if it be half my kingdom." 24 She went out and asked her mother, "What shall I ask?" The mother said, "The head of John the Baptist." 25And he returned quickly to the king, and said, "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate." 26The king was very sad, but he could not refuse. He had taken the oath before the guests. Immediately, the king ordered a soldier to fetch John's head. The soldier went out, slaughtered him in prison, and put his head on a plate and gave it to the girl. She handed it to her mother. 29 When John's disciples heard about it, they took the body and buried it. - Word of salvation.

Os três primeiros versículos introduzem a circunstância da morte de João Batista. Herodes manda matar João, que ele mesmo havia acorrentado no cárcere. Motivo? O que João havia feito de grave para merecer trágico fim? João Batista procurava ser coerente com a Lei e com a verdade, apontando os erros dos poderosos e do próprio casal real (adultério), e pondo em risco o poder político de Herodes. O prepotente Herodes manda tirar a vida do Batista, durante um banquete que ele oferecera “a seus magnatas, aos oficiais e às grandes personalidades da Galileia”. Nessa ocasião, faz os caprichos da filha de Herodíades, que pede a cabeça de João. Tão sem juízo a filha quanto maligna e impiedosa a mãe. O profeta se vai, mas o seu testemunho de fidelidade a Deus permanece para sempre.

The first three verses introduce the circumstance of the death of John the Baptist. Herod orders to kill John, whom he himself had chained in prison. Reason? What had John done to earn a tragic end? John the Baptist sought to be consistent with the Law and truth, pointing out the errors of the powerful and the royal couple (adultery), and endangering Herod's political power. The arrogant Herod orders to take the life of the Baptist during a banquet he had offered "to his magnates, to the officers and to the great personalities of Galilee." On this occasion he makes the whims of the daughter of Herodias, who asks for the head of John. As without judgment the daughter as malignant and ruthless the mother. The prophet is gone, but his testimony of faithfulness to God abides forever.
