Leitura do livro do profeta Isaías 42,1-4.6-7 – Assim fala o Senhor: 1“Eis o meu servo – eu o recebo; eis o meu eleito – nele se compraz minha alma; pus meu espírito sobre ele, ele promoverá o julgamento das nações. 2Ele não clama nem levanta a voz, nem se faz ouvir pelas ruas. 3Não quebra uma cana rachada nem apaga um pavio que ainda fumega, mas promoverá o julgamento para obter a verdade. 4Não esmorecerá nem se deixará abater, enquanto não estabelecer a justiça na terra; os países distantes esperam seus ensinamentos. 6Eu, o Senhor, te chamei para a justiça e te tomei pela mão; eu te formei e te constituí como o centro de aliança do povo, luz das nações, 7para abrires os olhos dos cegos, tirar os cativos da prisão, livrar do cárcere os que vivem nas trevas”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Reading of the book of the prophet Isaiah 42: 1-4,6-7 - Thus saith the Lord: 1 "Behold my servant - I receive him; behold my chosen one - my soul is well pleased in him; I have put my spirit upon him, he shall promote the judgment of the nations. 2 He crieth not, neither lifteth up his voice, nor maketh himself heard in the streets. 3Do not break a cracked reed nor quench a wick that still smells, but will promote judgment to obtain the truth. 4He will not faint, nor let himself be beaten, till he establishes righteousness in the earth; distant countries await his teachings. 6 I, the LORD, called you to righteousness and took you by the hand; I have formed you and made you the center of the covenant of the people, the light of the nations, 7 to open the eyes of the blind, to take captives out of prison, to deliver those who live in darkness from the prison. - Word of the Lord.

Evangelho

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas 3,15-16.21-22 – Naquele tempo, 15o povo estava na expectativa e todos se perguntavam no seu íntimo se João não seria o Messias. 16Por isso, João declarou a todos: “Eu vos batizo com água, mas virá aquele que é mais forte do que eu. Eu não sou digno de desamarrar a correia de suas sandálias. Ele vos batizará no Espírito Santo e no fogo”. 21Quando todo o povo estava sendo batizado, Jesus também recebeu o batismo. E, enquanto rezava, o céu se abriu 22e o Espírito Santo desceu sobre Jesus em forma visível, como pomba. E do céu veio uma voz: “Tu és o meu Filho amado, em ti ponho o meu benquerer”. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel 

Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke 3, 15-16, 21-22 - At that time, the 15th people were in expectation and everyone wondered in their hearts if John would not be the Messiah. 16Therefore, John declared to all: "I baptize you with water, but he who is stronger than I will come. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and the fire. " 21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus also received the baptism. And as he prayed, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in a visible form like a dove. And out of heaven came a voice, "Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I put my benquerer." - Word of salvation.

Refletindo o Evangelho 

O povo estava na expectativa pela vinda de um libertador e buscava o batismo ministrado por João no rio Jordão. Pairava uma dúvida na cabeça do povo: seria o Batista o Messias tão esperado que viria libertá-lo? João responde dizendo que “alguém mais forte” está para chegar. Ele simplesmente batiza com água, sinal de purificação e de conversão, e se coloca a serviço; mas o que virá (Jesus) batizará com “espírito e fogo”, batismo de salvação (espírito) e julgamento (fogo). É o dinamismo do espírito e o fogo de Pentecostes que animam os discípulos para a vivência e o anúncio da Boa-Nova do Messias. Em seguida, o próprio Jesus se mistura ao povo e busca o batismo de João. Enquanto é batizado, o céu se abre e “uma voz do céu” proclama Jesus “Filho amado do Pai”. A festa do batismo de Jesus é ocasião propícia para refletir e renovar nosso compromisso batismal. O batismo nos integra à comunidade e nos torna comprometidos com o projeto de Jesus. Juntos, como irmãos e irmãs, vamos caminhando com o Mestre, que nos convoca a dar continuidade à sua missão. Ouvindo a voz do Pai, que se manifesta pelo seu Espírito, fortalecemos e renovamos nossa fidelidade no seguimento a Jesus.

Reflecting the Gospel 

The people were looking forward to the coming of a deliverer and sought the baptism given by John in the Jordan River. There was a doubt in the minds of the people: would the Baptist be the long-awaited Messiah who would come to free him? John responds by saying that "someone stronger" is about to arrive. He simply baptizes with water, a sign of purification and conversion, and places himself in service; but what will come (Jesus) will baptize with "spirit and fire," baptism of salvation (spirit) and judgment (fire). It is the dynamism of the spirit and fire of Pentecost that animate the disciples for the experience and proclamation of the Good News of the Messiah. Then Jesus himself mingles with the people and seeks the baptism of John. As he is baptized, the heaven opens and "a voice from heaven" proclaims Jesus "the beloved Son of the Father." The baptism of Jesus is a propitious occasion to reflect and renew our baptismal commitment. Baptism integrates us into the community and makes us committed to the project of Jesus. Together, as brothers and sisters, we walk with the Master, who calls us to continue his mission. Hearing the voice of the Father, who manifests himself by his Spirit, we strengthen and renew our fidelity in following Jesus.
