Eis o Cordeiro de Deus, que tira o pecado do mundo.

Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

1a. Leitura

Leitura da primeira carta de são João 2,29-3,6 – Caríssimos, 29já que sabeis que ele é justo, sabei também que todo aquele que pratica a justiça nasceu dele. 3,1Vede que grande presente de amor o Pai nos deu: de sermos chamados filhos de Deus! E nós o somos! Se o mundo não nos conhece, é porque não conheceu o Pai. 2Caríssimos, desde já somos filhos de Deus, mas nem sequer se manifestou o que seremos! Sabemos que, quando Jesus se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele, porque o veremos tal como ele é. 3Todo o que espera nele purifica-se a si mesmo, como também ele é puro. 4Todo o que comete pecado comete também a iniquidade, porque o pecado é a iniquidade. 5Vós sabeis que ele se manifestou para tirar os pecados e que nele não há pecado. 6Todo aquele que peca mostra que não o viu nem o conheceu. – Palavra do Senhor.

Reading of the first letter of Saint John 2,29-3,6 - Dearly beloved, because you know that he is righteous, know also that everyone who practices righteousness is born of him. 3,1 Behold what a great gift of love the Father has given us: to be called children of God! And we are! If the world does not know us, it is because it did not know the Father. 2 Dear friends, we are God's children right now, but we have not even shown what we will be! We know that when Jesus appears, we will be like him, because we will see him as he is. 3 Everyone who expects in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. 4 Everyone who commits sin commits iniquity, for sin is iniquity. 5 Ye know that he was manifested to take away sins, and that there is no sin in him. 6 Everyone who sins shows that he did not see or know him. - Word of the Lord.

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João 1,29-34 – 29No dia seguinte, João viu Jesus aproximar-se dele e disse: “Eis o Cordeiro de Deus, que tira o pecado do mundo. 30Dele é que eu disse: Depois de mim vem um homem que passou à minha frente, porque existia antes de mim. 31Também eu não o conhecia, mas, se eu vim batizar com água, foi para que ele fosse manifestado a Israel”. 32E João deu testemunho, dizendo: “Eu vi o Espírito descer, como uma pomba, do céu e permanecer sobre ele. 33Também eu não o conhecia, mas aquele que me enviou a batizar com água me disse: ‘Aquele sobre quem vires o Espírito descer e permanecer, esse é quem batiza com o Espírito Santo’. 34Eu vi e dou testemunho: este é o Filho de Deus!” – Palavra da salvação.

Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to John 1: 29-34 - 29 The next day John saw Jesus approaching him and said, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 30Then I said, After me comes a man who passed before me, because he existed before me. 31I also did not know him, but if I came to baptize with water, it was that he should be made manifest to Israel. Refletindo o Evangelho 

João Batista não se contenta em anunciar a vinda do Messias. Colhe a ocasião para apontá-lo aos seus discípulos e ao povo. E o faz apresentando três características de Jesus: 1ª Jesus é o Cordeiro de Deus, que tira o pecado do mundo. Os judeus podiam entender o que significava ser “cordeiro”, visto que eles ofereciam cordeiros em sacrifício para implorar o perdão de Deus. Jesus vai sacrificar-se a si mesmo por nós; não haverá mais necessidade de oferecer animais em sacrifício. Jesus é o verdadeiro Cordeiro que substitui o cordeiro pascal; 2ª Jesus batiza não só com água, como João, mas batiza com o Espírito Santo. É o Espírito quem concede vida nova; 3ª Jesus é o Filho de Deus, aquele que revela o projeto do Pai.

Reflecting the Gospel 

John the Baptist is not content to announce the coming of the Messiah. Take the opportunity to point it to your disciples and to the people. And he does so by presenting three characteristics of Jesus: 1st Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. The Jews could understand what it meant to be "lamb," since they offered lambs in sacrifice to beg for God's forgiveness. Jesus will sacrifice himself for us; there will be no more need to offer animals in sacrifice. Jesus is the true Lamb who replaces the Passover lamb; 2nd Jesus baptizes not only with water, but John, but baptizes with the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who gives new life; 3rd Jesus is the Son of God, the one who reveals the Father's plan.
