I will not tell you by what authority I do these things.

Religious and civil leaders ask Jesus about the source of their authority. Jesus answers by asking too. It was one of the styles of debate among the rabbis. In fact, Jesus' question forces them to take a stand. To stand for John is to stand for Jesus. To stand against John is to stand against the people, who hold the Baptist in high esteem and regard. With no way out, they are mute.

1a. Leitura
– Palavra do Senhor.

1st. Reading
Reading the Book of Numbers 24,2-7.15-17 - In those days, 2Ballam looked up and saw Israel encamped by tribes. The spirit of God came upon him, and Balaam pronounced his poem: The speaker of him that heareth the words of God, that seeth what the mighty telleth him that falleth, and his eyes are opened. 5How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, and your dwellings, O Israel! 6They stretch out like valleys, like gardens by a river, like aloes which the Lord has planted, like cedars by the waters. 7Water overflows from its pitchers, and its seed is richly watered. Your king is more powerful than Agag, your kingdom is rising. ” 15And Balaam went on to pronounce his poem: “Oracle of Balaam son of Beor, oracle of the man who has eyes open, 16oracle of him who hears the words of God and knows the thoughts of the Most High, who sees what the Almighty makes him see. , that falls, and your eyes open. 17I see him, but not now; and I contemplate it, but not closely. A star comes out of Jacob, and a scepter rises from Israel. - Word of the Lord.

Salmo - 25/25
Fazei-me conhecer a vossa estrada, ó Senhor!
1. Mostrai-me, ó Senhor, vossos caminhos / e fazei-me conhecer a vossa estrada! / Vossa verdade me oriente e me conduza, / porque sois o Deus da minha salvação.

Psalm - 25/26
Make me know your road, O Lord!
1. Show me your ways, O Lord, and let me know your road! / Your truth guide me and lead me, / because you are the God of my salvation.
2. Remember, O Lord my God, your tenderness and your compassion, which are eternal! / Remember me, for you are mercy / and kindness without limit, O Lord!
3. The Lord is godliness and righteousness / and brings sinners back to the good way. / He directs the humble in righteousness, / and the poor he teaches his way.

Evangelho
Aleluia, aleluia, aleluia.

Gospel
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah. Show us, O Lord, your goodness / and your salvation grant us! (Ps 84,8) - Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew 21,23-27 - At that time, 23Jesus returned to the temple. As he taught, the high priests and elders of the people came to him and asked, “By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you such authority? ”24Jesus answered them,“ I will also ask you a question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Where did John's baptism come from? From heaven or from men? ”They reflected among themselves:“ If we say 'from heaven', he will say to us, 'Why did you not believe in him?' 26 If we say 'from men,' we are afraid of the people, for all have John the Baptist in prophet's account ”. 27They answered Jesus, "We do not know." To which Jesus also answered, "I will not tell you by what authority I do these things." - Word of salvation.
