Evangelho -Mateus 9,14-17

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, ¹⁴os discípulos de João aproximaram-se de Jesus e perguntaram: “Por que razão nós e os fariseus praticamos jejuns, mas os teus discípulos não?” ¹⁵Disse-lhes Jesus: “Por acaso, os amigos do noivo podem estar de luto enquanto o noivo está com eles? Dias virão em que o noivo será tirado do meio deles. Então, sim, eles jejuarão. ¹⁶Ninguém coloca remendo de pano novo em roupa velha, porque o remendo repuxa a roupa, e o rasgão fica maior ainda. ¹⁷Também não se coloca vinho novo em odres velhos, senão os odres se arrebentam, o vinho se derrama e os odres se perdem. Mas vinho novo se coloca em odres novos, e assim os dois se conservam”. – Palavra da salvação.

Refletindo o Evangelho

A expressão dos discípulos de João mais parece lamento do que alegria: “Nós e os fariseus jejuamos tanto…”. Jesus compara o jejum com o luto (v. 15). Então, acaso o jejum não é prática recomendável? Tudo dependerá do motivo por que se faz jejum. Jejuar, na tradição judaica, estava muito ligado à necessidade de obter favores de Deus. Cumprir os mandamentos para ganhar o céu. Ora, Deus não depende da quantidade de coisas boas que fazemos para nos acudir com suas graças. Graça vem de graça; não por nossos méritos. É o que Jesus nos ensina. E o apóstolo Paulo insiste: “É pela graça que vocês foram salvos… E isso não provém de vocês, mas é dom de Deus” (Ef 2,8). Quanto ao jejum que agrada a Deus, confira o luminoso capítulo 28 do profeta Isaías.

Reflecting the Gospel

The expression of John's disciples more seems to regret than joy: "We and the Pharisees have fasted so much ...". Jesus compares fasting with mourning (v. 15). So is not fasting recommendable? It all depends on why you fast. Fasting, in the Jewish tradition, was closely linked to the need to obtain favors from God. To keep the commandments to gain heaven. Now, God does not depend on the amount of good things we do to come to us with His graces. Grace comes for free; not by our merits. That's what Jesus teaches us. And the apostle Paul insists: "It is by grace that you have been saved ... And this does not come from you, but it is the gift of God" (Eph 2: 8). As for the fasting that pleases God, check out the bright 28th chapter of the prophet Isaiah.
