Reflection 

Não nos conformemos em sermos o que somos, mas, pelo contrário, morramos a cada dia para sermos melhores. Nada de depreciação e desvalorização. Um atleta se dedica para ser cada vez melhor, e como ele morre para si mesmo, na dedicação, no esforço, na luta, no combate, no levantar cedo, em todos os empenhos que faz! Que empenho devemos fazer com a nossa alma, com o nosso espírito e com o nosso coração para sermos melhores a cada dia? Assim como o atleta que não treina atrofia seus membros, seu corpo, e vai perdendo toda a sua agilidade e habilidade, a alma que não se renova atrofia e não experimenta o novo de Deus a cada dia. Trabalhemos com empenho para sermos novos e renovados a cada dia na presença de Deus.

Reflection 

We do not settle for being what we are, but, on the contrary, we die every day to be better. No depreciation and devaluation. Reflection 

Depois de despedir a multidão e pedir aos discípulos que se dirijam à outra margem, Jesus sobe a montanha para rezar. De madrugada vai ao encontro dos seus, caminhando sobre o mar. Quando Pedro pede e Jesus manda que ele venha, ao pular do barco começa a andar sobre as águas e, quando percebe que está afundando, grita por socorro. O Mestre o censura pela falta de fé. Estamos sempre andando sobre o mar perigoso, mas devemos fazer sempre voltados para a frente, com o olhar da fé, para não se deixar abalar e não ser tragado pelas ondas. Com os pés fora da comunidade, a pessoa vai esmorecendo na fé e facilmente será levada pelas ondas das conveniências. Nas horas difíceis, porém, não podemos esquecer que o Mestre está presente e é necessário invocá-lo para que nos salve.

Reflection 

After saying goodbye to the crowd and asking the disciples to go to the other bank, Jesus goes up the mountain to pray. At dawn he goes to meet his people, walking on the sea. When Peter asks and Jesus orders him to come, when he jumps out of the boat he starts to walk on water and, when he realizes that he is sinking, he cries out for help. The Master rebukes him for his lack of faith. We are always walking on the dangerous sea, but we must always look forward, with the look of faith, so as not to be shaken and not to be swallowed by the waves. With his feet out of the community, the person will fade in faith and will easily be carried away by the waves of conveniences. In difficult times, however, we must not forget that the Master is present and it is necessary to call on him to save us.

Reflection 

Jesus recrimina seus discípulos “por causa de sua fraqueza na fé”.  Jesus espera que o povo o reconheça como o Filho de Deus e assuma seu projeto de vida e libertação, não um realizador de milagres. Os discípulos têm necessidade de reforçar a fé para dar seguimento a Jesus. Estamos talvez no mesmo nível dos discípulos: somos uma geração de fé pequena em Jesus. Então, os milagres não se dão ou acontecem raramente.

Reflection 

Jesus reproaches his disciples "because of their weakness in the faith". Jesus hopes that the people will recognize him as the Son of God and assume his plan of life and liberation, not a miracle worker. The disciples need to strengthen their faith in order to follow Jesus. We are perhaps on the same level as the disciples: we are a generation of small faith in Jesus. Na morte de Jesus, a cruz se torna símbolo de fidelidade aos planos de Deus e de luta pela justiça. Morreu crucificado, porque não se acovardou diante das ameaças dos inimigos, nem mutilou a verdade de sua mensagem. Foi pregado na cruz, porque se manteve totalmente fiel à vontade do Pai, com quem vivia em constante comunhão e sintonia. A partir de Jesus, a cruz se torna sinal de vitória, triunfo da verdade e fidelidade a Deus e à pregação do evangelho. Todo cristão é convidado a tomar a própria cruz e seguir Jesus.

Reflection 

In the death of Jesus, the cross becomes a symbol of fidelity to God's plans and the struggle for justice. He died crucified, because he did not chicken out in the face of threats from enemies, nor mutilate the truth of his message. He was nailed to the cross, because he remained totally faithful to the Father's will, with whom he lived in constant communion and harmony. Junto com Pedro, Tiago e João, Jesus sobe a montanha e lá se transfigura (transforma) diante deles. O Mestre aparece na sua glória (seu rosto brilha e suas roupas ficam brancas) e se mostra vitorioso contra as forças do mal. Da nuvem sai a confirmação de que Jesus é o Filho amado de Deus. É necessário ouvi-lo, pois ele revela o projeto de seu Pai.

Reflection

Um grande profeta surgiu entre nós / e Deus visitou o seu povo, aleluia (Lc 7,16). – Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus 15,21-28 – Naquele tempo, 21Jesus retirou-se para a região de Tiro e Sidônia. 22Eis que uma mulher cananeia, vindo daquela região, pôs-se a gritar: “Senhor, filho de Davi, tem piedade de mim: minha filha está cruelmente atormentada por um demônio!” 23Mas Jesus não lhe respondeu palavra alguma. Então, seus discípulos aproximaram-se e lhe pediram: “Manda embora essa mulher, pois ela vem gritando atrás de nós”. 24Jesus respondeu: “Eu fui enviado somente às ovelhas perdidas da casa de Israel”. 25Mas a mulher, aproximando-se, prostrou-se diante de Jesus e começou a implorar: “Senhor, socorre-me!” 26Jesus lhe disse: “Não fica bem tirar o pão dos filhos para jogá-lo aos cachorrinhos”. 2ß7A mulher insistiu: “É verdade, Senhor; mas os cachorrinhos também comem as migalhas que caem da mesa de seus donos!” 28Diante disso, Jesus lhe disse: “Mulher, grande é a tua fé! Já imaginou a mulher cananeia com sua filha que “está terrivelmente endemoninhada”. A princípio, Jesus não diz sequer uma palavra, atitude que poderia deixar com raiva a mulher aflita. Mas ela não desiste. Para se verem livres dela, os discípulos pedem que Jesus lhe dê atenção. Jesus fala com ela, salientando que Israel tem preferência no plano da salvação, ensinamento para os discípulos que mais tarde irão anunciar o evangelho pelo mundo afora. Ela sustenta o debate e mostra que pode haver fé autêntica também fora do povo de Israel e aí muitos estão esperando ao menos uma migalha do Reino de Deus. Saída magistral. Fé admirável.

(Jo 1,49) – Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus 15,1-2.10-14 – 1Naquele tempo, alguns fariseus e mestres da Lei, vindos de Jerusalém, aproximaram-se de Jesus e perguntaram: 2“Por que os teus discípulos não observam a tradição dos antigos? Pois não lavam as mãos quando comem o pão?” 10Jesus chamou a multidão para perto de si e disse: “Escutai e compreendei. 11Não é o que entra pela boca que torna o homem impuro, mas o que sai da boca, isso é que torna o homem impuro”. 12Então os discípulos se aproximaram e disseram a Jesus: “Sabes que os fariseus ficaram escandalizados ao ouvir as tuas palavras?” 13Jesus respondeu: “Toda planta que não foi plantada pelo meu Pai celeste será arrancada. 14Deixai-os! Reflection 

Alguns doutores da lei e fariseus fazem uma acusação grave: “Por que os teus discípulos desobedecem à tradição dos antepassados?” Na resposta para eles, Jesus inclui também a multidão e expõe um critério válido para todos: a impureza da pessoa não provém de um alimento, mas do íntimo da própria pessoa. Impuro é o ser humano com suas más intenções, egoísmo, injustiça. A resposta de Jesus não os leva a mudar de comportamento são: “cegos guiando cegos”.

Reflection 

Some doctors of the law and Pharisees make a serious accusation: "Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of their ancestors?" In the answer for them, Jesus also includes the crowd and sets out a criterion that is valid for everyone: the impurity of the person does not come from a food, but from the intimate person. Impure is the human being with his evil intentions, selfishness, injustice. Jesus' response does not lead them to change their behavior: “blind leading the blind”.

(Jo 1,49) – Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus 14,22-36 – Depois que a multidão comera até saciar-se, 22Jesus mandou que os discípulos entrassem na barca e seguissem, à sua frente, para o outro lado do mar, enquanto ele despediria as multidões. 23Depois de despedi-las, Jesus subiu ao monte para orar a sós. A noite chegou, e Jesus continuava ali, sozinho. 24A barca, porém, já longe da terra, era agitada pelas ondas, pois o vento era contrário. 25Pelas três horas da manhã, Jesus veio até os discípulos, andando sobre o mar. 26Quando os discípulos o avistaram andando sobre o mar, ficaram apavorados e disseram: “É um fantasma”. (Jn 1,49) - Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew 14,22-36 - After the crowd had eaten until they were satisfied, 22Jesus ordered the disciples to enter the boat and go ahead of him, to the other side from the sea, while he would dismiss the crowds. 23 After leaving them, Jesus went up to the mountain to pray alone. Night came, and Jesus was still there, alone. 24The boat, however, far from the land, was agitated by the waves, because the wind was the opposite. 25At three o'clock in the morning, Jesus came to the disciples, walking on the sea. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, "It's a ghost." And they screamed in fear. 27Jesus, however, immediately said to them: “Courage! It's me. Do not be afraid!" 28Then Peter said to him, "Lord, if it is you, send me to meet you, walking on water." 29And Jesus replied, "Come!" Reflection 

Jesus caminhou sobre as águas. Um de seus discípulos, Pedro, com a permissão do Mestre, também caminhou sobre as águas. Só não resistiu por mais tempo nessa nova modalidade, porque era “fraco na fé”. Não faltam em nossa vida as dificuldades; tampouco faltam as tribulações da missão. O que precisamos ter, em qualquer circunstância, é total confiança em Deus. Com seu poder, Jesus acalma a todos.

Reflection 

Jesus walked on water. One of his disciples, Pedro, with the Master's permission, also walked on water. It just didn't last longer in this new modality, because it was “weak in the faith”. Difficulties are not lacking in our lives; neither are the tribulations of the mission lacking. What we need to have, under any circumstances, is total trust in God. With his power, Jesus soothes everyone.

O homem não vive somente de pão, / mas vive de toda palavra que sai / da boca de Deus, e não só de pão. / Amém. Aleluia, aleluia! (Mt 4,4) – Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus 14,13-21 – Naquele tempo, 13quando soube da morte de João Batista, Jesus partiu e foi de barco para um lugar deserto e afastado. Mas, quando as multidões souberam disso, saíram das cidades e o seguiram a pé. 14Ao sair do barco, Jesus viu uma grande multidão. Encheu-se de compaixão por eles e curou os que estavam doentes. 15Ao entardecer, os discípulos aproximaram-se de Jesus e disseram: “Este lugar é deserto e a hora já está adiantada. Despede as multidões, para que possam ir aos povoados comprar comida!” 16Jesus, porém, lhes disse: “Eles não precisam ir embora. Dai-lhes vós mesmos de comer!” 17Os discípulos responderam: “Só temos aqui cinco pães e dois peixes”. 18Jesus disse: “Trazei-os aqui”. 19Jesus mandou que as multidões se sentassem na grama. Então pegou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, ergueu os olhos para o céu e pronunciou a bênção. Em seguida partiu os pães e os deu aos discípulos. Os discípulos os distribuíram às multidões. 20Todos comeram e ficaram satisfeitos, e, dos pedaços que sobraram, recolheram ainda doze cestos cheios. 21E os que haviam comido eram mais ou menos cinco mil homens, sem contar mulheres e crianças. – Palavra da salvação.

But when the crowds heard about it, they left the cities and followed him on foot. 14 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He was filled with compassion for them and healed those who were sick. 15In the evening, the disciples came to Jesus and said: “This place is deserted and the hour is already late. Fire the crowds so they can go to the villages and buy food! ” 16Jesus said to them, “They don't have to go. Give them something to eat yourselves! ” 17The disciples replied, "We only have five loaves and two fish here." 18Jesus said, "Bring them here." 19Jesus ordered the crowds to sit on the grass. Reflection 

Jesus tentar se afastar do povo, mas este corre a ele aonde quer que vá. Podem ser várias as razões pelas quais a multidão o procura; para o Mestre não importa o motivo. Jesus enche-se de compaixão, sofre a mesma dor desse povo. Se houvesse mais compaixão por parte de todos, muitos males e sofrimentos seriam resolvidos, incluindo o da fome. Ela existe não por falta de alimento, mas por falta de partilha e de compaixão. Jesus convidou a multidão a cear com seu grupo, repartindo os pães e peixes que levavam consigo. Trata-se de gesto muito comum para os orientais. A cultura ocidental normalmente partilha a mesa com a família, parentes e amigos convidados. O “novo mundo”, anunciado pelos profetas e iniciado por Jesus, vai se concretizar quando trilharmos o caminho da justiça e da fraternidade. Só assim superaremos a tendência maléfica do “cada um por si”.

Reflection 

Jesus tries to get away from the people, but they run to him wherever he goes. There may be several reasons why the crowd is looking for you; for the Master it doesn't matter why. Jesus is filled with compassion, suffers the same pain as these people. If there was more compassion on the part of all, many ills and sufferings would be resolved, including that of hunger. It exists not for lack of food, but for lack of sharing and compassion. Jesus invited the crowd to supper with his group, sharing the bread and fish they carried with them. This is a very common gesture for Orientals. Western culture usually shares the table with family, relatives and invited friends. The “new world”, announced by the prophets and initiated by Jesus, will be realized when we walk the path of justice and fraternity. Only in this way will we overcome the evil tendency of “each one for himself”.

Felizes os que são perseguidos por causa da justiça do Senhor, / porque o Reino dos céus há de ser deles! (Mt 5,10) – Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus 14,1-12 – 1Naquele tempo, a fama de Jesus chegou aos ouvidos do governador Herodes. 2Ele disse a seus servidores: “É João Batista, que ressuscitou dos mortos; e, por isso, os poderes miraculosos atuam nele”. 3De fato, Herodes tinha mandado prender João, amarrá-lo e colocá-lo na prisão por causa de Herodíades, a mulher de seu irmão Filipe. 4Pois João tinha dito a Herodes: “Não te é permitido tê-la como esposa”. 5Herodes queria matar João, mas tinha medo do povo, que o considerava como profeta. 6Por ocasião do aniversário de Herodes, a filha de Herodíades dançou diante de todos e agradou tanto a Herodes, 7que ele prometeu, com juramento, dar a ela tudo o que pedisse. 8Instigada pela mãe, ela disse: “Dá-me aqui, num prato, a cabeça de João Batista”. 9O rei ficou triste, mas, por causa do juramento diante dos convidados, ordenou que atendessem o pedido dela. 10E mandou cortar a cabeça de João no cárcere. 11Depois a cabeça foi trazida num prato, entregue à moça e esta a levou para a sua mãe. 12Os discípulos de João foram buscar o corpo e o enterraram. (Mt 5,10) - Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew 14,1-12 - 1 At that time, the fame of Jesus reached the ears of the governor Herod. 2He said to his servants: “It is John the Baptist, who rose from the dead; and, therefore, the miraculous powers work on him ”. In fact, Herod had ordered John to be arrested, bound and put in prison for Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. 4For John had said to Herod, "You are not allowed to have her as your wife." 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, who regarded him as a prophet. 6On the occasion of Herod's birthday, Herodias' daughter danced before everyone and pleased Herod so much, 7 that he swore an oath to give her whatever he asked for. 8 When asked by her mother, she said: "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a plate". 9 The king was sad, but because of the oath before the guests, he ordered them to heed her request. 10And he had John's head cut off in prison. 11Then the head was brought on a plate, given to the girl and she took it to her mother. 12 John's disciples went to fetch the body and buried it. Reflection 

João Batista e Jesus cumpriram a missão de profetas. Foram fiéis executores do plano de Deus: justiça, amor e vida abundante para todos. Herodes, ao invés, foi promotor do antirreino: mergulhado na maldade, seguia ceifando vidas, oprimindo o povo, cavando sua própria condenação. Os convidados para o banquete aceitaram passivamente que João fosse degolado no cárcere: covardes e malignos como o próprio Herodes! Tendo por modelo o Batista, possamos desmascarar a ousadia dos que se creem com poder absoluto para eliminar pessoas, exterminar povos. Alguém tem que dar um basta a essa fúria incontrolável. Ainda que pague com a própria vida

Reflection 

John the Baptist and Jesus fulfilled the mission of prophets. They were faithful executors of God's plan: justice, love and abundant life for all. Herod, instead, was a promoter of the anti-kingdom: immersed in evil, he continued to take lives, oppressing the people, digging his own condemnation. The banquet guests passively accepted that John was beheaded in prison: cowards and evil men like Herod himself! Using the Baptist as a model, we can unmask the boldness of those who believe that they have absolute power to eliminate people, exterminate peoples. Someone has to put an end to this uncontrollable fury. Even if you pay with your life.
