Evangelho - João 6,35-40

Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus à multidão: ³⁵“Eu sou o pão da vida. Quem vem a mim não terá mais fome e quem crê em mim nunca mais terá sede. ³⁶Eu, porém, vos disse que vós me vistes, mas não acreditais. ³⁷Todos os que o Pai me confia virão a mim, e quando vierem, não os afastarei. ³⁸Pois eu desci do céu não para fazer a minha vontade, mas a vontade daquele que me enviou. ³⁹E esta é a vontade daquele que me enviou: que eu não perca nenhum daqueles que ele me deu, mas os ressuscite no último dia. ⁴⁰Pois esta é a vontade do meu Pai: que toda pessoa que vê o Filho e nele crê tenha a vida eterna. E eu o ressuscitarei no último dia”. – Palavra da salvação.

Gospel - John 6,35-40

Whoever comes to me will no longer hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. 36But I told you that you saw me, but you did not believe. 37 Everyone who the Father trusts me will come to me, and when they come, I will not turn them away. 38For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39And this is the will of him that sent me, that I should lose none of them whom he gave me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For this is the will of my Father: that every person that seeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life. Refletindo o Evangelho

Os contemporâneos de Jesus veem o milagre da multiplicação dos pães e peixes (alimento material), mas não acreditam nele, não aceitam o dom de sua pessoa: “Vocês me viram e não acreditam”. No entanto, ele afirma de si mesmo: “Eu sou o pão da vida. Quem vem a mim nunca mais terá fome, e quem acredita em mim nunca mais terá sede”. Ao dizer “Eu sou”, Jesus assume o nome do Deus libertador do Antigo Testamento (cf. Ex 3,14). Ele é o dom de Deus para a vida da humanidade. Jesus fala de uma vida definitiva, que ele quer transmitir. A condição para receber essa vida definitiva não é a aceitação intelectual de verdades e doutrinas. Trata-se de adesão profunda à pessoa de Jesus que nos comunica vida plena. A salvação só estará completa com a ressurreição.

Reflecting the Gospel

Jesus' contemporaries see the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes (material food), but they do not believe in him, they do not accept the gift of his person: "You have seen me and do not believe." However, he says of himself: "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger again, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. " In saying "I am," Jesus takes on the name of the liberating God of the Old Testament (cf. Ex 3,14). He is the gift of God to the life of mankind. Jesus speaks of a definitive life, which he wants to convey. The condition for receiving this definite life is not the intellectual acceptance of truths and doctrines. It is a deep adherence to the person of Jesus who communicates to us a full life. Salvation will only be complete with the resurrection.
