In the earth the nations will be distressed, with awe of the noise of the sea and the waves. 26 Men will faint with fear only in thinking about what will happen to the world, because the forces of the heavens will be shaken. 27And they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud with great power and glory. 28 When these things begin to happen, arise and lift up your heads, for your deliverance is at hand. 34Be careful that your hearts are not insensible because of gluttony, drunkenness and cares of life, and that day does not suddenly fall upon you; 35 For this day will fall like a trap upon all the inhabitants of all the earth. 36Therefore, be attentive and pray at every moment, that you may have strength to escape all that is to come, and to stand before the Son of man. Refletindo o Evangelho 

Com o primeiro domingo do Advento, iniciamos novo Ano Litúrgico. Este ano será marcado pelo Evangelho de Lucas, principalmente durante o tempo comum. O capítulo 21 de Lucas, do qual é tirado o texto deste domingo, faz parte do longo discurso de Jesus em Jerusalém nos últimos dias de sua vida. O pano de fundo é a destruição da cidade de Jerusalém e do templo. O texto é composto por duas partes distintas: na primeira descreve, em perspectiva de futuro, a segunda vinda do Senhor. Os acontecimentos do ano 70 são descritos como se tratasse de catástrofe cósmica. A segunda parte fala de orar e vigiar, ou seja, convida a entender os sinais dos tempos, Deus se revela nos acontecimentos cósmicos e sociais. O tempo do Advento sempre é tempo de esperança de um mundo novo. Esse “mundo melhor” não acontece de forma mágica, exige empenho de nossa parte. Deus continua vindo e agindo no mundo; por isso é preciso percebê-lo nos acontecimentos do nosso cotidiano. Vigiar e levantar a cabeça para não sermos enganados, encher o coração de esperança, acolhendo as visitas que Deus nos faz.

Reflecting the Gospel 

With the first Sunday of Advent, we begin the new Liturgical Year. This year will be marked by the Gospel of Luke, especially during the common time. Luke chapter 21, from which the Sunday text is taken, is part of Jesus' long discourse in Jerusalem in the last days of his life. The backdrop is the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the temple. The text is composed of two distinct parts: in the first it describes, in future perspective, the second coming of the Lord. The events of the year 70 are described as being a cosmic catastrophe. The second part speaks of praying and watching, that is, invites us to understand the signs of the times, God reveals himself in the cosmic and social events. Advent time is always a time of hope for a new world. This "better world" does not happen in a magical way, it requires commitment on our part. God continues to come and act in the world; so it is necessary to perceive it in the events of our daily life. Watch and lift our heads so we will not be deceived, fill our hearts with hope, welcome the visits that God makes us.

Leitura do livro do Apocalipse de são João 22,1-7 – A mim, João, 1o anjo do Senhor mostrou-me um rio de água viva, o qual brilhava como cristal. O rio brotava do trono de Deus e do Cordeiro. 2No meio da praça, de cada lado do rio, estão plantadas árvores da vida; elas dão frutos doze vezes por ano; em cada mês elas dão fruto; suas folhas servem para curar as nações. 3Já não haverá maldição alguma. Na cidade estará o trono de Deus e do Cordeiro, e seus servos poderão prestar-lhe culto. 4Verão a sua face, e o seu nome estará sobre suas frontes. 5Não haverá mais noite: não se precisará mais da luz da lâmpada nem da luz do sol, porque o Senhor Deus vai brilhar sobre eles, e eles reinarão para toda a eternidade. 6Então, o anjo disse-me: “Estas palavras são dignas de fé e verdadeiras, pois o Senhor, o Deus que inspira os profetas, enviou o seu anjo, para mostrar aos seus servos o que deve acontecer muito em breve. 7Eis que eu venho em breve. Refletindo o Evangelho 

Na conclusão do Ano litúrgico, o Senhor nos incentiva a perseverar na prática do bem. O ser humano tende facilmente a abandonar a vivência das virtudes e acomodar-se nos braços da preguiça. Os vícios e as preocupações da vida nos roubam o tempo que poderíamos aplicar à vida de oração e à construção de relações fraternas saudáveis. Vigilância e oração, temas fortes e frequentes no tempo do Advento são recomendações de Jesus para toda nossa vida. A oração perseverante coloca-nos em sintonia com Deus. Atentos aos seus projetos. Sem medo de sua visita. Nosso modelo de vigilância é Jesus Cristo, sempre pronto a fazer a vontade do Pai: “Faço sempre o que lhe agrada” (Jo 8,29). Aos cristãos de Tessalônica, o apóstolo Paulo recomendava: “Não vos canseis de fazer o bem” (2Ts 3,13).

Reflecting the Gospel 

At the conclusion of the liturgical year, the Lord encourages us to persevere in the practice of good. The human being tends easily to abandon the experience of the virtues and to settle in the arms of laziness. The vices and worries of life rob us of the time we could give to the life of prayer and the building of healthy fraternal relationships. Vigilance and prayer, strong and frequent themes in the time of Advent are Jesus' recommendations throughout our lives. Persevering prayer puts us in tune with God. Attentive to your projects. No fear of your visit. Our model of vigilance is Jesus Christ, always ready to do the will of the Father: "I always do what pleases Him" (Jn 8,29). To the Christians of Thessalonica, the apostle Paul recommended: "Be not weary in well doing" (2 Thess. 3:13).
